No tragedy on Ottawa streets is acceptable. We can get to Zero by demanding our governments designing transportation systems that put safety first.

Tired: Police enforcement alone to manage speed compliance, same risky behaviours repeating. Necessary, but ineffective and reactive. 🚓😮‍💨

Wired: Canada adopts EU-style Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA)- helps drivers stay within limits by default. Safe systems > Endless enforcement. 🚗⚡🛑

🎨 Street Art = Traffic Calming 🚦

Street art isn’t a gimmick — it’s a proven placemaking tool that works.

✅ Adds colour, pride, and identity to our streets
✅ Slows vehicle speeds — especially near schools 🏫
✅ Signals “people live here,” not “drive through faster”

Seems like a good time to ask parents to not drive their kids to school if there’s an alternative. 25-40% of morning traffic is now the school run. And to advocate for safe separated infrastructure to allow active transport to school for kids.
Joy.

From the Reframe Road Safety campaign (Fall ‘23) developed with NOYS calling out those who design, approve & implement inequitable transportation systems that disproportionately affect youth + BIPOC communities.

This is a defining moment for Ottawa. Our land‑use rules have prioritized car movement and parking over building communities for people. Council’s choice: embrace people‑focused density or the status‑quo sprawl of the past century

If we want a city built for living-not just driving-this vote counts
Today's the day!

#OttCity Council votes on the final draft of our new Zoning By-law.

We're hoping for strong commercial parking policies to limit further sprawl in #Ottawa.

A great way to prevent #Ottawa's continued sprawling is to reduce car-parking maximums for box stores via #OttCity's new Zoning By-law.

Thanks to @ottawacitizen.com for publishing our op-ed with Walkable Ottawa on this. #SustainableCities #Sprawl #CarParking

Safe school streets shouldn't be a luxury or a special "pilot project" we have to beg for—they should be the default setting for every child in our city.
Our Kids Deserve Better on School Streets [1/2]
Show Us Your School Street! For many parents, especially of young kids, the school run can be one of the hardest, most anxiety-inducing parts of the day. Whether you're late for work, stuck in traffic, or just dealing with a stubborn kid, school drop-offs or pickups can be a stressful experience. We often blame the bad drivers in front of us or the rushed parents blocking us in, but if we step back—literally—we can see that the problem isn't just human behavior.

Great piece from @ecologyottawa.bsky.social : big-box retail is ~60% parking to retail by surface area—no wonder it’s hostile to people and the environment. The new zoning bylaw could fix this by curbing parking and building more human-scale places.

Tragedy exposes weak standards. Canada lags the EU on vehicle size and pedestrian impact safety, and people are dying because of it. Rapid change means opportunity—align our vehicle rules with Europe now
Yet another pedestrian killed by the driver of an oversized pickup. It's time to regulate the size of large pickups and SUVs before they kill more of our neighbours. Vehicles this size offer no practical utility over smaller counterparts.

We don’t know what happened and we will not make assumptions in this tragedy.

Part of our advocacy efforts is for road crash investigations to shift focus from human error to intersection and road design, to make crashes less likely and severe in aiming for zero tragedies.

Person struck by a driver inflicting serious injury, the first tragedy of 2026. We expect this person, their family and community, have a life-changing road to recovery. We know that Ottawa has a road safety policy of accepting tragedy as inevitable. This tragedy is an outcome, not an accident.

LED and HID headlights are increasingly popular, not to mention oversized vehicles with high nose heights...

Let’s be clear:

👉 Sidewalks are about mobility equity, safer streets, and reducing car dependency.

👉 Calls for “more studies” and endless deferrals aren’t caution — they’re obstruction. Delays at the expense of people who walk, roll, and rely on transit.
The #ManorPark sidewalk issue is not over yet…. still signs up in the snow!
