Every year in Metro Vancouver, car crashes kill 100 people. We can get to zero by demanding that governments design transportation systems to put safety first. http://linkin.bio/visionzeroyvr
On Friday we had the opportunity to host a "Roadmap to Vision Zero" discussion hosted by Vancouver Coastal Health. Over 30 elected leaders, decision makers, stakeholders and activists joined for a very engaging and productive discussion. Thanks to all who participated!

When a Vision Zero advocate, a Conservative MLA, and every single morning radio caller agree on an issue, you know something's up.

Listen here, on the NDP's decision to jeopardize safety on our roads by reducing the already insufficient amount of driver training:

Very frustrating to still see public campaigns like this from Delta PD telling kids to wear bright reflectors on their costumes and people to leave their bikes at home.

The risk to pedestrians on Halloween comes from drivers, not cyclists.

Our Halloween message from Vision Zero Vancouver! 🎃 A little hard to hear, ironically because of all the cars

Large turnout today in support of traffic calming on 16th. People shouldn't fear for their safety in their own neighbourhood. Now it's time for the city to act.

Thank you @lucymaloney.bsky.social and @seanorr.bsky.social for attending and speaking in support.

In light of this horrific incident, and years of residents demanding change with no action from the city, we're helping support a "stroll in" protest tomorrow.

Meet at 16th and Willow at 1pm (maybe with an umbrella ☔) and let's tell the city that it's time to make our streets safe.

We emailed the city about these concerns last year and met with transportation staff. Despite our concerns and our explanations that their arguments hold no water, their minds were unchanged. Their hypothetical concerns trumped real safety issues. (4/5)

The city's response? No to traffic calming, because 16th is too important for "transit, goods movement, and emergency vehicles."

The facts:
❌ no buses run on 16th east of Granville
❌ 16th is not a trucking route
❌ emergency vehicles much prefer the wider Broadway or King Ed

16th Ave is a residential street. It's full of families, seniors, kids, people walking around. Unfortunately it sees a lot of fast-moving traffic.

Last year, residents on 16th called for traffic calming due to the high volume of crashes. (2/5)

Exciting to see the ribbon cutting for this new plaza, a collaboration between the city and the Uptown BIA. New West is doing great things for place-making and community building. Thanks to Mayor @pjnewwest.bsky.social, city staff, the BIA, and all involved!

Eby repealed a carbon tax that had been working in BC for almost 2 decades in order to make gas a bit cheaper, and handed out $410 million to drivers for basically no reason. And now there's no money for active transport grants. 300 people a year are killed in BC in motor vehicle crashes.

Congratulations @emilylowan.bsky.social on being elected leader of the @bcgreens.bsky.social ! When we met Emily earlier this summer we were very impressed with her understanding of the road safety challenges we face across the province. Definitely an ally for our cause!

How can we fix this spot? A super easy one would be speed & red light cameras. Indeed, it's one of the spots that we called for the City to have one, before Brian Montague and ABC voted instead for "more study" (still waiting on those studies). (3/4) www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Victoria & 12th is in the middle of a very residential neighbourhood, 2 blocks from Trout Lake Park and 4 blocks from the SkyTrain. People are always walking and cycling in the area, and yet there's no traffic calming. The sidewalks are centimeters away from high speed traffic. (2/4)

We had the pleasure to interview @lucymaloney.bsky.social about road safety for the Paper Rag zine! Here's a sneak peak. There are no digital copies; if you want to read more, buy it in person (Book Warehouse on Main carries them) or subscribe to them to support: www.patreon.com/PaperRag

Everyone that rides through here knows that the connection between the Arbutus Greenway and Kent sucks. No wayfinding, steep hills, parking lots, 6-lane arterials... The good news is a motion from @mikeklassen.bsky.social aims to fix this! Along with much needed improvements on Kent. (1/3)
