A cool tech/science fact I like is that essentially all the energy consumed by a computer is converted into heat. A 1000 watt computer produces the same amount of heat as a 1000 watt space heater. So you can basically think of all your electronic devices as fancy space heaters that do math.

'Surely no emperor just got as far as the Thames then gave up & fucked off?'
'Mm. Let's see how Julius did.'
Are we 100% sure that's not @alexhorne.bsky.social ?

Rob Reiner: “Silence in the face of authoritarianism is complicity. Speaking out is a patriotic act. Democracy doesn’t defend itself. It requires participation, vigilance, and courage from ordinary people."

Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

Rob Reiner directed so many absolutely world-class films that you could be forgiven for listing some of them as your favourites and forgetting it was him that made them.
Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

The fact is no presenter has ever had to leave the BBC for expressing conservative views, or even explicitly endorsing a right-wing party.

Was never a problem for Jeremy Clarkson. Was never a problem for Andrew Neil. Was never a problem for Alan Sugar

Honestly, in a way, the Americans should be thanked for giving us the sort of natural experiment that would be completely unethical to run.

The MMR should be mandatory in the UK along with the rest of the vaccine schedule. They've proven that individual recklessness has unacceptable consequences.

A movie changing its aspect ratio intentionally can be cool and elevate the artistry of the film, fwiw.

The bit in Galaxy Quest where Tim Allen realized he’s actually in fucking space was impressive because of the aspect ratio and it allows us to understand his idea of the world is becoming bigger.

I’m but a simple country theoretical physicist, and I can say, in my professional capacity, “datacenters in space” is so colossally, monumentally stupid that it is difficult to know where to start with which laws of physics the idea is spitting in the face of the most.
“.. Skeptics believe the technical risks are being underestimated and say space-based data centers won’t be competitive on cost, especially if power and other constraints ease on the ground.”
