The way time, place, age & memory shape experience is so interesting. The Pfälzisch neighbors of my childhood were ever patient with people learning and trying German. And excursions to France were the opposite, belittling. So seeing people here talk about an inverse reality is...thought provoking

Actually my brother-in-law just noted something I think gets at a lot of it: Super Bowl ads used to feel like *ad companies* made them, like actual creative people with wild ideas

Now it’s like an in-house marketing team is like “give the Millennials some Backstreet Boys, they’ll clap like seals”
Was just saying this to the husband, like I know I was much easier to please in my youth and now I’m cynical and cranky, but istg the few years have been absolute ASS
maybe I was just younger and less mature but I swear Super Bowl commercials used to be funnier

Olympics is the perfect time to obsess over this brilliant idea some more.
there was a post going around awhile ago re. what a women’s sports version of “Heated Rivalry” might look like which enforces oppressive norms of femininity the way the men in Rachel Reid’s books feel trapped by oppressive norms of masculinity, and I have been thinking about this nonstop ever since

Fellow writers: I am deeply saddened to share that if we want the rewards of having written, we must submit to the mortifying ordeal of writing

Incredible. The way I want a NY library card. I know people there, should I bug them?

It is not gonna be unique to Minneapolis.

Local authorities are not the ones "engineering" this.

The people mad about this are like, extremely normal people who just think that the government should not shoot people for no fucking reason and also not kidnap five year olds and use them for bait.
Putin pioneered this. No opposition is legitimate. Regular, decent, “ordinary” people cannot possibly be against us because only we represent “the real people.”

Tell-tale sign of authoritarianism.

Or staying up late at night to read every romance your mom checked out from the library when you were in middle school - Garwood, Deveraux, etc. And THEN discovering the horniest stuff in the paperback exchange section of the library. What a time!
It's much easier to encounter Romance in the traditional way. Stumbling upon paperbacks at your grandma's house when you are 12.

Battlestar Galactica and Lost are my (apparently) controversial choices. I loved every metaphysical thing about both of those shows, esp the endings.
Given that apparently the Stranger Things finale was meh (idk, didn't watch it, just the scuttlebutt) and we're not that far removed from the disastrous GOT finale that retroactively made everyone have never cared about the show:

What's the *best* ending to a show you've ever seen? Quote/reply etc

you know what, I'm also going to choose violence and say that I am unequivocally and wholeheartedly a "Lost" finale stan

iow there was as much misinfo, but also there were hearings, a public debate, getting Tony Blair onboard etc. even as millions marched in protest.

Less than a minute into the first ep, one of the guys says "you remember Binge Mode?" (MY ALL TIME FAVE POD) and then does the Jason "DEEEEEEPPP" thing and I knew I was in for good stuff.

Anyway, I binged all of the Empty Netters Heated Rivalry eps yesterday. Fantastic.
