There are multiple deities and pantheons, all claiming to be responsible and with mutually exclusive evidence of their claims. And a few esoteric scholarly organizations who think they know how things got started.

No one really knows what got the ball rolling, so one story's as good as any other.

#WIPSnips The word for December 1st is 'belong'. I've got 'belonged'. 'The Book of Ashes', Chapter 2, 'Pilgrims'. Recycling a paragraph I've used before where Paul Brotherwell is still not comfortable with Michelle De La Croix and her veil-walker's talents.
A soft feathery touch inside his head made him frown and he was still frowning when he saw Michelle De la Croix walk out of the dark rain curtain beyond the bus station's lights like the night belonged to her alone and head towards the cafe's entrance.    Shaking out her umbrella Michelle folded it and propped it by the door to drain off    before she entered the cafe.    Nobody would try stealing that umbrella that was something Paul knew for certain, - not that anyone was around at the moment to make the attempt.
