And it's GOOD y'all. If you have any interest in the genre at all, I recommend it VERY highly.
If you're not familiar with Velveteen, it's my superhero dystopia, and from the fact that I've been writing it for fifteen years, you can see that it's not just me trying to capitalize on the popularity of THE BOYS.

i laughed *and* i wish i could read the dissertation from 200 years from now that references this post as a confluence of popular culture from three different centuries.
Vast and trunkless legs of stone $200
Half sunk shattered visage $150
Wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command $800
Hand that mocked them $3600
Pedestal $150

someone who is good at entropy help me budget this. No thing beside remains

It's interesting that wise conservative business guys implicitly understand "return on investment" except when it comes to this. It's better for YOU if your neighbor gets enough to eat so he can become your community's mechanic, accountant, dentist--whatever!--instead of lying dead in a ditch
The welfare state is about dignity, equality, and making people not poor, but as @itsafronomics.bsky.social says/cites here, it’s often also an investment that more than pays for itself
Why should you 🫵🏿 care about SNAP? SNAP recipients saw:

- Improved life expectancy
- Lower chance of incarceration
- Lowers chance of poverty
- Lived in better neighborhoods
- Higher human capital

SNAP keeps our neighbors fed, communities safer, and kids educated. Also people are HUNGRY. DUH!

Everyone using ChatGPT says they are being responsible and always double check it, blah blah, but somehow real life (job applications, college essays, people arguing online, legal fillings, computer code) is full of ChatGPT output that clearly nobody checked. What a bizarre mystery

No, it fucking doesn’t! It literally does not! You can look and see which of those narratives more closely approaches the truth. You can collect facts and build a narrative of your own that reflects reality!

We talk a lot about how the mindset of there being two sides and how you're on the good side, can make you vulnerable to hubris if you're too inflexible but I think the mindset of there being two sides that are both wrong and you being in the sensible middle makes you even more vulnerable to hubris

A lot of folks in the comments are saying the map is wildly imbalanced in favor of D and G, and they're not wrong, but I don't see nearly as many considering how inconvenient it would be to have to import all of your ingredients. The real strat is picking the octant you live in and eating local!
For the rest of your life, you can only eat food from one of these regions. Which do you choose?

I recently talked to a guy who thinks AI won / is inevitable, who doesn't understand why anti-AI people get so mad about it (handwaves off energy, copyright, jobs) also doesn't see users clog up human review that used to work

screenshots are from 2023 and 2024 this has gotten worse across the board

The key to what "crime" means in politics is that it's when a dirty stranger, probably dark-skinned, sometimes just gay, jumps out at you with a knife and goes "raaAAaGhH", or is just standing around and you feel like they might do that. Slapping your wife around or embezzling is just being a rascal
Trump claims crime is down to "virtually nothing" in DC & adds the crimes that are happening are "much lesser things. Things that take place in the home they call crime. You know, they'll do anything they can to find something. If a man has a little fight w/the wife they say 'this is a crime. See?'"

You can argue about potential but the *current level of publicly available production AI tools* is clearly incredibly well suited for exponential advances in scammer productivity (volume and surface verisimilitude important, accuracy unimportant) and possibly negative progress in scam detection

Facebook and LinkedIn once had genuine utility as places you could keep aware of important life events (marriage, kids, moving) and career updates from people in your life who you like and hope are doing well but aren't close enough to talk to all the time. But that doesn't make any money I guess
I remember when LinkedIn was "that place I logged into once a year to see where people I worked with years ago ended up", not "the worst parts of instagram combined with copious amounts of adderall"
Somebody on LinkedIn said what we're all thinking.

This reminds me of when Zemeckis claimed the "performance capture" technology used on Polar Express, Beowulf, and Christmas Carol seamlessly captured the expressions on actors' faces and transferred them to the CG characters, while it actually worked poorly and was manually "fixed" by animators
So apparently, it may turn out that The Wizard of Oz at the Las Vegas Sphere wasn’t entirely made in AI and Google threw the VFX crew under the bus by claiming it was all done by artificial intelligence.

If true, then fucking yikes.

If you don't want to write a part you feel like you're "supposed to write," like a description of a room that you feel like is boring to write, maybe your readers would also find it boring to read and you could just not do it. The writing cops will not come and arrest you for not checking that box
if u see this, quote-post with your tips for writers that no one gives anymore because they seem obvious (even though they're not)

The conservatives' complaint about the Superman immigrant angle is that they think it's only true as a humorous rhetorical technicality like when they joke about Elon Musk being African American, assuming we all agree Superman obviously doesn't have anything in common with like, nonwhite immigrants

The message should be that Trump cut the FAA, and there was a huge plane crash. Trump cut the weather service, and a bunch of people died in a flood. What’s next?

RFK fits in with the administration so well because his approach to health is the same as the conservative approach to money: if you already have it, it's because you deserve it. If you don't have it, you must be punished to motivate you to earn it
I guess the media needs it to be spelled out but the core principle of RFKj wellness fascism is that if you get sick it’s your fault, you could have avoided it by using the right “supplements” and working out, so you might as well die because you’re of no use
If you find this confusing you should never comment on American politics ever again.

what if we abolished slavery but for real?
Unironically the thing I love about this point, is that it's a great basis to start talking to y'all about the fact that most of the people in jail in the US are just as innocent as Khalil. Many are Black folk that have been arrested with *absolutely no basis*, but wait *over a year* to see a judge.
The thing about the Khalil case is that it's very very good that he's free now but you can't have it take three months between "the government kidnaps you off the street for no basis reason whatsoever" and "a judge makes them let you go." You just can't.

I picked up the remastered version of Spyro the Dragon this week and there sure are no female characters in this game, huh? Over 50 dragons I've met so far, all male. And yet, there are dragon eggs. I'm already devising theories about where they come from.

who in any position of power is getting so upset about improper gender terminology that they fail to recognize when someone's heart is earnestly in the right place?
