Small farmer, ex-farm worker, crop scientist. Here to talk food, farms, & money.

There's a min wage that's keyed to how much it would take to hire US workers for the same job (adverse effect wage rate, AEWR).

So in theory this is how much H2A workers get paid. And it's how much contractors charge farmers to rent H2A workers.

Plus fees for housing, food, transport, etc.

Both threads are a good read, and highlights exactly why Dems in the 00s were right to refuse to create a residency status that explicitly barred citizenship. People who live in the US and is aren't citizens are easier to control and exploit because they have fewer options.
THREAD

H2A guest worker visas are finally a big enough program that farmers are ready to switch to that instead of undoc'd workers.

That's why they're rounding up undoc'd people.

Farms don't really need them anymore, & they're "too hard to control."

That hasn't changed!
I'm calling bullshit on the media narrative that Trump is "pivoting" and "deescalating" on his ICE raids. The threshold is this: As long as the military occupations and the treatment of US cities as enemy territory continue, there's no pivot. ICE out. 1/

It was also an excuse to drop the H2A minimum wage by $1-3/hr

which historically has been hard to do bc that min wage *exists to keep H2A workers from competing w US labor*

The right is not, in fact, a blind blob of stupid hate acting at random.

The hatred has a funny way of being channeled into very specific policy objectives.

That we totally miss bc we keep buying the bullshit about how this is a "culture war" & we "just have to work on messaging."

Donald Trump Is Frightened
Trump wants to appear eager to minimize out-of-control clashes between government militias and protesters. But he doesn’t want to stop the things causing those clashes in the first place.

Nothing has actually changed here, as near as I can tell. Maybe a few hundred fewer agents deploying to Maine and Iowa, but not significantly different.

It’s cold comfort right now but, if past is prologue, spectacles of violence committed by the state against sympathetic civilians—especially when captured on camera—were the beginning of the end for Bull Connor and Jim Crow, too.

New poll from Navigator also with an incredible result; the largest drop in support for ICE since June was actually among *Republicans*, 25% of which now say they have an unfavorable opinion of the agency.

Minnesota National Guard members have arrived at a federal building and were directed to distribute donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate to anti-ICE protesters. Guard members were issued reflective vests so they would not be mistaken for federal agents.

Because by the time you make it & post it, it ain't the news anymore!

Anyway, for everyone wondering why farmers keep voting for Trump despite all the ::gestures broadly::

Former hotel person here: You want the franchises, the owners, and the management companies. Sometimes those are the same but often times those are three separate companies. Typically it's the management company making the call with the franchise saying if they approve of said call. (cont)
Do we know what hotel chains are hosting ICE & CBP in Minneapolis?

It's wild that business schools don't teach "There are still people who don't buy Volkswagons bc of World War 2."

But there's no time like the present for a refresher, I guess.

to be fair this is Raleigh, so statistically ~20-40% of the drivers in this photo are recent transplants from New Jersey

I remember when this photo was taken. Winter weather in the south is always interesting.
