I feel we are still at a strategic disadvantage re: potato names vs the UK. They have off-the-cuff quaintness down pat
CORRECTION: A *third* potato has been named after Prince.

I highly recommend this entire thread, not just the initial link.
It was 62 years ago #OnThisDay in 1963 that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Here's a piece I wrote for the History of the BBC website a couple of years ago about how the BBC covered the news.

I'm quite pleased with this one...

Dear Bolton Wanderers fans. Jimmy Savile was from Leeds, not Bradford. The name you were looking for is Peter Sutcliffe.

I was reminded today of Varoomshka, the Guardian's 1970s satirical newspaper comic strip in monumentally dubious taste.

Do you think Jimmy Webb intended the frightening sense of sanity slippage in MacArthur Park or is that all Richard Harris?

I've got Remember Bethlehem by Jake Thackray stuck in my head. It's the only Christmas song I know of the acknowledges Mary would have had to go through the pain of childbirth.

James Pettigrew regarding Bob Monkhouse on The Golden Shot, Sunday Mirror, 29/10/67:

“…why tarnish the gilt on the gingerbread with tasteless gags? Like that one about consenting adults which you made during a film clip of wrestlers falling accidentally in an obscene heap on the canvas.”

What's great about this is that one of them will absolutely nail it, and you're impressed, and then it refreshes after a minute and the same model will be laughably bad, and this is 100% my professional experience with LLMs.
Hahaha! Er. Someone has used AI to make analogue clocks with the live time.

Analogue clocks are really hard.

AI: spectacularly confident. Can be both subtly and spectacularly wrong. This is a lovely illustration of that.

What are your top 5 movie genres? Mine are:

1. A humorous, frightfully British heist
2. It's the 60s and we're trying too hard to be po-mo
3. Spies aren't sexy, they're sad
4. One of DC Comics' top two characters
5. A thriller, but tropes and structure aren't codified yet so it's v. unpredictable
1. Would've been TV play before 1981.
2. Reinvents literary novel visually in way purists loathe that unlocks it for new audience.
3. A Louise Brooks louisebrooks around louisebrooksily in front of understandably dumbstruck men.
4. Monster stalks Day For Night woods.
5. Nearly kissing then kissing.
What are your top 5 movie genres? Mine are:

- we're stealing it all, and looking cool doing it
- monsters!!!
- is that an eldritch horror, or are we making a serious socio-political point?
- oh no, the aliens are more human than we are
- we're here, we're queer, we have a spaceship
