There are a few successful writers on social media who will tower over you, telling you "If it's not magnificent, forget it" (I blame Ken Campbell). Below is the correct advice. Keep producing the work, accept the criticism, give it a fair hearing but don't let it overwhelm your efforts.
As we enter the New Year remember fear of making bad art is holding you back. Fear of people not liking your work is holding you back. Rejection is holding you back

You'll make bad art, you'll have people not like your work, and you'll be rejected. Moving past it is half the job of being a creative

I've seen few people this year say that "best of my writing" posts are boring.

They're not boring! They're a chance for me to read great stuff I've completely missed!

The secret is out – my authorised biography of Sir Roy Clarke (Last of the Summer Wine, Keeping Up Appearances, Open All Hours) is to be published by Ten Acre Books in 2026. Getting to know Roy over the years has been a joy and it's a honour to be entrusted with telling his story. Watch this space.
Congrats to writer Roy Clarke on his Knighthood in the New Year Honours. We're excited to share that we'll be publishing Roy's authorised biography in 2026, written by @andrewtsmith.bsky.social, exploring the life and career of the man behind Last of the Summer Wine, Keeping Up Appearances and more.

Rhoda, “Martin Swallows His Heart”: Great fun, and how the show just lifts when Benny isn’t around. Brenda even gets the best line of the episode (“Go fish!”)

What a shame the show was yanked from CBS before this one aired.

guggigiugyxgufihydrog, is my considered opinion.
A very happy birthday to Jennifer Ehle!

Her British TV roles in 90s are iconic, with the definite Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice and the utterly different Calypso in The Camomile Lawn.

Every so often I see her in something (like the King's Speech) and am delighted to see her

Rhoda, "The Total Brenda": A production team which has realised Benny isn't good enough, and is trying to rescue the character so we're on board for the wedding.

It's a valiant attempt, but the gap is just too wide to get there.

This isn't news to regular users of my online teletext viewer as it's been online for ages, but one of the channels has a service from this evening 40 years ago.
This was recovered from a VHS tape and every page painstakingly repaired and turned back into a packet stream

Rhoda,"Brenda Gets Engaged":

Sorry, I just don't believe it. Brenda wouldn't like Benny enough to get engaged to him. The result is the first proper creative mistake that the show has made, and frankly no wonder it was cancelled. It's trying my fucking patience, and I used to love the show.

Watched the incredible Double Indemnity last night, and filled in all bits where they clearly fucked, but they weren't allowed to say.

Mind you, I did the same with The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Just watched the 1979 Christmas Generation Game, and a very clear moment where I suddenly realised: oh, THAT'S why Keith Harris became famous, he's actually a really good ventriloquist.

Here's my Christmas gift to you all. A retrospective on one of the most perturbing - but also brilliant - comedy specials of all time. I speak of course of One Foot In The Grave's "The Man Who Blew Away" from 1994. What Yuletide has since been complete without a round of The Laughing Policeman?

Rhoda, “Rhoda vs. Ida”: After numerous episodes where I was beginning to wonder where the show I loved had gone, what a relief to get this one.

Valerie Harper and Nancy Walker finally get given some real material again.

The title of this video is called "WORST Mary Tyler Moore Episode? Let's Facepalm Together!", and I am not stupid, I know what clickbait is, but I still find it infuriating that an interesting topic is put out there in the most irritating, childish way possible.

Just read that Keeping Up Appearances is “dated”, and can you BELIEVE that it portrays certain social mores from the 90s that you wouldn’t do now, I’m absolutely stunned.
