Surprise anthology release today!
Scott's planet is a shared world anthology about a colony abandoned on a world still in its Carboniferous period. That means giant bugs, no real trees, and a lot of wacky biology to play with.

The vaccine autism thing is bullshit but even if you believed it, it seems incredibly fucked up to then believe that raising child death rates is some sort of worthwhile trade-off to reduce autism rates

I rarely weigh in on things outside of my writing bubble, but Jay's a great short spec fic reviewer w/high volume, consistent coverage that isn't in a mag/column. Extremely hard to find blogs like it. Def check out his work if you're curious about the latest in short SFF.

I’m a review-heavy blogger whose main goal is to share excellent SFF, especially underappreciated work. I have a particular focus on short fiction, trying my best to capture whatever appeal there is in each work (even work I don’t love), whether it’s The Themes or the storytelling or something else.

Hey #birdsky, I was at the Huntington Library's (Pasadena, CA) hummingbird garden today. Did I catch a rufous hummingbird? It is January? I thought they were migratory and only here in the spring and fall? Stills in next post.

2025 was a pretty rough year all around, but it was an excellent year for new books, with stories about characters who tackled everything from the big existential problems facing the world to the ones right in their back yard to aliens, dragons, and more.

Here are my favorite reads of the year:

My 2026 low stakes resolution is to do more things for joy.

I picked out a blackwork embroidery pattern to start with.
okay let's do a thread of FUN ONLY, no-stress, low-stakes New Year's Resolutions that are designed not to make you become a Better™️ Person™️ but purely to increase the amount of happiness in your life in 2026

I'm going to learn Polish folk embroidery and I want to DM at least a one-shot of something

THIS. Did you know sickle cell is curable, now? FULLY curable.

If you're feeling down or despairing about what FEELS like technology/advancement/science "standing still" or being fully malicious, I have great news: You're not paying attention to actual science. Just tech industry marketing.
meanwhile.... medicine has taken INSANE leaps and bounds in the last 2 years.
we're out here curing HIV and leukemia and creating 100% efficacy vaccines against all sorts of cancers, and now this??

between this and renewable energy outstripping fossil fuels in efficiency, the future is bright
Wanna see real-life miracles? Fund scientific research.

A team of US scientists just cured Alzheimer’s in mice — and there is now hope that the disease can be reversed in humans.

This year I'll write more. Journal every day. Read 100 books. Just Be Better.

Resolutions don't work. We all know that, but if you are still feeling the urge to change something at the start of the year, try a Theme instead.

Tool: Yearly Themes
Instead of a New Years resolution, try a gentler approach by setting a yearly or seasonal theme. Here's how.

You don't need AI as an indie author, you need community. You need people who can help you when you're burning out (and vice versa, importantly). Trade labor with each other, beta read for one another, connect with editors and cover artists. Teach & learn. Help promote one another.

Want some Dragons in your Western? A locked boat murder mystery in your sci-fantasy? GBBO in outer space? A Necromantic bildungsroman? Searing examinations of war with bonus military Pteranodons? A literal plot device?

We've got all that and more!

This, so much! I’ve met a lot of people who spend years writing and rewriting this one book they had an idea for instead of just … letting it go and writing the next thing.

In my opinion this is the first hurdle on the way to becoming a professional writer, and it’s one that many stumble on.
As an instructor or mentor there's nothing more exciting to me than seeing a student let go of that first novel and move on to other projects. That hill is often the hardest to get someone past.

I got dumb lucky that my first novel died in a hard drive failure. At the time, devastated. But lucky.
