Book 57 of 2025: Speculative Whiteness: Science Fiction and the Alt-Right by @jordanscarroll.bsky.social. Intriguing examination of right-wing culture and how science fiction can figure into it, either by design or by willful misinterpretation.

Book 56 of 2025: Fox Trot: Pass the Loot by @billamend.bsky.social. I picked up a stack of these collections this fall, and I’ve been enjoying working my way through them from the beginning. This was a fun one, and I’m always happy to see how well they’ve held up.

OK, less contentious post:

You've been placed in charge of a movie studio, and have an unlimited budget to adapt any work of your choosing that has never been made into a live-action TV series or film. What are you picking?

For me: PC Hodgell's Kencyrath Cycle and there's no close second

Book 55 of 2025: The Greatest Sentence Ever Written by Walter Isaacson. This was an interesting little book: a deep dive into a key sentence of the Declaration of Independence. It’s a neat exercise.

Book 54 of 2025: Runes of Engagement by @daveklecha.bsky.social and @tobiasbuckell.bsky.social. Exactly as the title suggests: marines dropped into a fantasy world. It’s light, pilot, and a lot of fun.

This right here. @vermonthistory.org has 50,000 items in our library (that's just the items, not individual pages), and another 30,000 in our artifact collection. It's a *huge* task to digitize all of this.
When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.
Seems like it's worth posting this one again.

Split Fiction hit all the right buttons for me: it's a video game about genre writers, IP and corporate malfeasance, wacky stories, and some really fun gameplay.

Can anyone recommend a good day planner? I’m looking for something with decent paper, daily entries (a week per two pages?), stiff / hard cover?

Book 53 of 2025: Vermont Female Farmers by JuanCarlos González. This is a gorgeous photography book that showcases Vermont’s farm women and their stories. The photography is beautiful and it paints a picture of the connection these women have with the land.

Oh huh. Changing URLs seems to have broken the automatic fediverse posting that I had set up. If you followed @index.transfer-orbit.ghost.io.ap.brid.gy, uuuuhhhh. Sit tight?
Here's a heads up for Transfer Orbit stuff: the domain for my personal website was coming due, so I ended up shifting it over to Ghost. You can now find TO at www.andrewliptak.com.

Well, this is depressing af. I will always have fond memories of grabbing the latest dragonlance, forgotten realms, dark sun, spelljammer, etc. They were almost always mass market paperbacks. So portable. So loved. So deeply missed.

Don't get old. They just take away the things you love.
The era of the mass market paperback is coming to an end, and that’s not good thing for anyone.

I jotted down some thoughts about the history of the format and why its end isn’t a great sign for the publishing industry: transfer-orbit.ghost.io/mass-market-...

Allen Steele’s Coyote novels are back in print as of today! He experienced some issues with publishers and agents a while ago, and earlier this year announced he’d figured out how to get them back in circulation, via Open Road.

I spoke with Steele and wrote about their return here:

Like idk 75%(maybe a little high but still) of the sci fi, horror, and fantasy greats we all celebrate and make shows about now are thanks to the mass market paperback format. This sucks
