I'm giving a talk on Tuesday about a new standard that flips the script on cookie notices, surveillance, and the adtech fecosystem. Its IEEE P7012, better known as #MyTerms. It'll be on Zoom. More at doc.searls.com/2025/11/14/m...
MyTerms are Your Terms
That’s the case I’ll be making next Tuesday in a talk at Indiana University. The subject is big—maybe the biggest in your online life. That’s because MyTerms is the only way you&#…

I cannot wait:
This was fun. Now we can expect Scott to blow off the Stress of all that prep by getting drunk on the job and gambling all his savings away.
Fresh off a fantastic talk with @shaneivey.bsky.social about the nuts and bolts of the upcoming Black Company RPG, what went into creating this system, and how it bring’s Glen Cook’s world to life. I am beyond excited to see this come to the table.

Part One of the interview coming soon. 🤘🏻😊

Science is cool
We use distant black holes to know the position of Earth in space. If we invented GPS and didn’t use them to confirm our position, GPS would be inaccurate and unusable because we could not tell the precise positioning of Earth even though we’d know the relationship between your car and a satellite.

the trouble with having a loft full of cannibalised kits and at least fifteen Bisley tool drawers full of kit bits is that you go in looking for a couple of interesting gribblies and come away an hour later with about twelve new model ideas

No one in Detroit is doing anything even remotely like MRKT, easily one of the best bands in the city right now. Experimental space-prog inflected with jazz fusion and krautrock, incredible jams and unusual time signatures, totally fantastic live. Link to their music in comments!

I'm enthralled by the great quality of the adventures that have sprung forth from The Raspy Raven organised competition.

Third Party Community Content Creation embraces all of Sanction, and I'm loving what's coming out of it.

🧵if you cover the community & economic & environmental impact of data centers, cloud & AI companies, so called hyperscalers in the US… please be aware:
"10a labs", a 'security research' firm employed by the big AI companies has begun collecting information and attacking organised opposition to data centres, framing them as "NIMBYS" and wildly exaggerating claims.

Tell me you cannot hear Tim Robinson saying "I'm not Mario, I'm... Wario"

And Sam Richardson confidently following up with "And I'm WALUIGI"

"YOU CAN'T JUST ADD WA- TO YOUR NAME YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR OWN THING, I CHANGED THE M TO A W, YOU JUST ADDED WA-"
Hear me out: For the Super Mario Movie sequel, Wario and Waluigi, two guys who show up to claim credit for Mario & Luigi saving Brooklyn while M&L run off to the Mushroom Kingdom

“Open source” as defined for the past couple decades is not the end of history nor the last word ever to be said on the subject. In fact, one can argue — as Erlend does and I would, too — that licensing innovation is very urgently needed. The world has changed since the nineties, let’s catch up!
Anti-fascistic software is made possible by pro-labor licensing.

I've been trying to write this piece for years. Every time I get started I'm just overwhelmed with paralyzing visions of the FOSS commentariat accusing me of WrongThink.

But I'm tired and we urgently need to get our shit together.
Open Source Power
We have to talk about open source licensing.

Huge scoop from Ed, who had several years of financial reports leaked to him. OpenAI has been over-reporting their revenue. The company is even less profitable than we knew.
Exclusive: Based on documents viewed by this newsletter, OpenAI spent over $12.4 billion on inference from 2024 to September 2025. As part of its Microsoft revenue share, it sent $493.8m in 2024/$865.8m Jan-Sep 2025, implying lower revenues than previously reported.

Castle Rock v. Gonzales is, no joke, my Roman Empire.

Once you learn the full details of this horrific case, you will never again be able to see policing as a force for safety or justice.

It will permanently alter your understanding of state violence, gender, and race in this country.
In 1999, a woman named Jessica Gonzales sought and obtained an order of protection against her physically abusive husband ("AH"), who had repeatedly threatened to kill her and their three children. The order included language specifically limiting when and where AH was allowed to see the children.
