Fiction: Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein. It’s more philosophy text than action book but it started the job of chugga-vrooming my brain about big ideas.
Non-fiction: The Dictator’s Handbook by Bruce Bueno de Mesquita & Alastair Smith. Should be required reading for high schoolers imo.

At any time one of these pathetic losers who just want to be liked could write a charity check so large they go down in history as the Real Santa Who Really Saved Christmas For Real, but they just won’t do it. Instead they’ll fund a Like Me Squad of goons who stand on your neck till you like them.
The depth of the shame of a country this wealthy and abundant allowing its people to go hungry is impossible to measure. The fact that a handful of people could fix this by paying their fair share of taxes while still remaining obscenely wealthy makes it even worse.

my read on it has always been that people who vote for third-party candidates in the US see voting as a consumer choice and view it as similar to going to the health food store to pick out the products they can't find at the supermarket chain, which is alas not at all how voting actually works here
This narcissistic attitude that sees a vote as a curated extension of your personal brand or a version of a celebrity endorsement is going to be the death of this nation.
