Moral of the story:

I think both gamers and the gaming industry need to stop treating "The Movie Adaptation" as a mark of prestige, when you consider the track record.

It demeans the uniqueness of gaming as a medium to suggest a video game only achieves true cultural validity by sacrificing...
This is just it, isn't it?

Everyone thinks if you focus on adapting a video game's **LOOOOORE** it'll compensate, but, uh-

No.

Lore means nothing without player inference. Otherwise, it's just a wiki, a set of decontextualized facts with no emotional resonance.
yeah the part about using movied to inspire videogames is the interactive element adds more layers to the text. doing the reverse removes layers.

You can call him the greatest living director & just about everyone will agree - Coppola, Spielberg, & Lucas say it - but with his teaching, evangelism & film preservation he's probably done more for the cinema than anyone, anywhere, ever.

Wow, this must be one of the most popular things I've ever posted on here, guess I hit upon a sentiment a lot of people were feeling? So, can you do me a favour?

Advocate for the art you love. Talk about it, uplift it, introduce it to others, leave reviews. Let's not just focus on the negative.
Why am I so against generative AI in games?

Because I simply do not want my initial reaction to art to be one of suspicion and scrutiny, AI slop is fundamentally damaging my relationship to art and artistry, and I am deeply resentful that it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed.

Genuinely I think the video games industry is too large across too many games over too many hours across too many countries and languages to ever have a genuinely representative voting block outside of people that do nothing but play games all days. Most devs I know play like 3 games a year.
The DICE awards already do something similar to this and the awards are just as bad and go to an even slimmer pool of games because shockingly lots of oversees games get left out.
The only game dev I've ever known in my life barely even plays new releases. It doesn't work out how you would expect.

Love to see a peckerwood centrist weasel get the libs all riled up because prison abolition doesn’t have an immediate solution to everything, as if working towards a world with less punitive justice and focusing on removing the root causes of most crimes isn’t a better ideal than what the U.S. has.

Capitalism is incredible. Sorry, former teacher, your retirement fund is gone because 5 guys who've collectively never worked a full hour told the banks to put all the money in the country into virtual girlfriend futures

There are orgs that want to use the energy around all of this to push for censorship/surveillance legislstion as well as promote swerf ideology under the guise of supporting victims

one interesting thing about animation is that even though institutional knowledge is being lost thanks to industry churn and corporate malpractice, fans themselves have picked up the slack and continue to carry on older styles and practices.
Production art I did in late-2024 of SQUIM on the Smiling Friends episode "Squim Returns"! I just adore this character and I had so much fun drawing him! Once again, huge thanks to Zach Hadel, Michael Cusack, and Aron Fromm for having me design this critter! 🤪

I fully believe that Cameron is not being metaphorical here, and that, when he spoke to Rodriguez about Alita 2, he plunged a dagger into Rodriguez' hand and clasped it to his own bloody palm, screaming in insane tongues all the while.

Never bet against Jim Cameron.

Make the calls. Complain to MC and Visa.

Call your reps. Tell them that payment processors should be required to process any legal transaction.
So yes, this is a “beginning of the end” thing for me and simple stuff like, for example, having a bank account. Now is a good time to fight this issue and do so very publicly — it’s a matter of financial life or death for me
