This is true of other compliments as well! As my CM and my therapist have both pointed out, people don't *have* to compliment you. They choose to, taking time and getting past any anxiety they have, to do it.
So take them at face value as genuine, because they are.

You see, the thing about being trans is so many times other people will spot the signs you’re in pain before you do. This is often the result of you being brought up to put everyone else’s needs before yours. And it takes extra effort to de-program when you finally shed the expectations of others.
