the experience of having a dance spectacle narrated by the sports team always makes me want an option to go to a ballet where you have, like, John McEnroe in an ear saying “I’m being told that this is Drossel… Drosselmeyer? ominous cape there! watch how he jumps on the clock! no capes in my day”

I had the privilege to see Sir Patrick Stewart in both Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra. It completely changed the way I approached and appreciated Shakespeare through a modern lens.
I do think that if you have never had the experience of watching professionals perform shakespeare you may not understand how *resonant* it remains. it’s not stuffy at all. it can feel essential

Our capitalists don’t envision automation as a bridge to human prosperity, otherwise they’d advocate for the types of fundamental societal changes that would make that possible such as UBI or investment in infrastructure through taxing their income. Their vision for automation is a robot with a whip

Pretty much any work that relies on creative skill is taking a bad hit; too many people look at it and think, “that’s not hard, *I* can do that” - so (a) they don’t value it, and (b) they can’t tell the difference between good and bad quality. As a result, they’re happy to settle for “cheap.”
So many industries and career paths are going this way

A corollary to this is how Bari Weiss is doing this thing at CBS where she’s like “we’re doing a NEW thing and if you aren’t EXCITED maybe find a new job”. You know what people at CBS would be genuinely excited for without you demanding it? Being the best news channel and doing the best work.
Bezos has the resources to make WaPo into the BEST sports outlet and BEST science outlet and BEST place to get trusted news without feeling any sort of negative financial impact but is happy to turn it into Quillette because he’s lost whatever creative spark he had and turned into a vapid dullard

it’s difficult to overstate how much the next generation of Republicans is worse

we’re seeing a little of it bleed into the current admin with their social media interns but basically every young person actively engaged in Republican politics is a psychotic freak who should be exiled from society

Hey funny story!

Remember how for like 20 years we said if you tell people to only study STEM that job market would tank & also no one would be able to think critically about rhetoric or ethics, know what happened at any point in history or value much but money?

Man, I love that one. Cracks me up.
