I am strongly in favor of survivors speaking up and I also note: look---look!---who has to be public and who gets to be private

and then ask yourself: if there are around a thousand survivors, how many rapists are just going about their morning, privately
NEW: Epstein survivors release the most powerful PSA I have ever seen.

Make this go viral so every member of the House of Representatives sees it.

I teach middle school, and every time I tell someone what I do the response is some version of "Oh, bless you, I could never, that age, etc!" While I generally find it a little annoying because these kids are actually really great, it does prove a point: We know that 14 yr olds are not adults.
Agreed 👍

If anyone in your life is justifying this coverup by saying 15 year olds are legal. Do. Not. Let. Them. Around. Your. Children. 🗣️

Because here’s the thing: thinking someone is hot may be involuntary, but “wandering eyes” don’t wander on their own—ogling anyone is a conscious choice, just like groping or making comments is. Own your choices, and choose not to be a creep.

Putting the real world down on paper
This week's newsletter looks at how we use maps. I review a new book on the subject, interview a mapmaker and show how maps can reshape our assumptions about borders. It's all topped off with what I t...

This story does a good job of arguing that there’s nothing happening to men that isn’t happening to everyone else. It’s just that this is the first time a broken system has caught up with men, and unlike the rest of us, they don’t know how to cope with the system being against them.
What Did Men Do to Deserve This?
Changes in the economy and in the culture seem to have hit them hard. Scott Galloway believes they need an “aspirational vision of masculinity.”

I can reassure the New York Times that networks of mutual protection, and misogynist retaliation efforts that benefit abusive men at the expense of the young women they prey upon, are very much still intact post-Me Too.
This is nauseating: “As the emails stretch through the years, they show how that protected realm vanished into the mists of time, pulled under by the rising forces of the internet and the #MeToo movement.” A “Gone With the Wind” framing for sexual abuse and harassment.
Seriously, what is wrong with these people?

A huge amount of state resources intended to fight crime - from the FBI to state and local police to DEA agents to IRS tax enforcement - have been redeployed to immigration enforcement. It is a great time to be a criminal in America.
“Homeland security agents investigating sexual crimes against children…have been redeployed to the immigrant crackdown…hampering their pursuit of child predators…efforts to combat human smuggling and sex trafficking have languished…”

It's a great cosmic joke that neurodivergence both runs in families and gets diagnosed based on parent reports. I was diagnosed at 30 because a man who has eaten potatoes every day for 57 years and a woman who collects loose buttons decided I was a perfectly normal child.

Just a note that the US passed landmark civil rights legislation enforcing the rights of disabled students to reasonable accommodation. This is a form of segregation. And segregationists like this also tend to believe in other forms of segregation.
A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

My friend's family always did a full Practice Thanksgiving (before her mom died) that was allegedly to try out new recipes before the actual dinner, but realistically about doubling the person-hours spent together. I loved it.
Strip away the formal trappings of Thanksgiving dinner. The core of the joy is in the ability for loved ones to come together and celebrate the abundance on the table.

IOW, it’s a day dedicated to the person-hours of cooking.

There are so many other things you can make with those person-hours!

Yes. A lot of this is downstream of educational outcomes becoming a status competition between parents, which I think has become significantly worse in part as a result of shrinking bourgeois family sizes bsky.app/profile/mort...
Yeah you would think the goal of education is to give important knowledge and techniques to as many people as possible but the way a lot of people (parents especially) want to approach it is a competition where the goal is to "win" and they get mad if you touch rankings or level the playing field
Not to lay my cards on the table but I think this narrow focus in online discourse on who deserves to be rewarded really elides the actual societal value of the education system (teaching members of society important stuff that it's valuable for them to know)
