Let's look at a single object, humble and everyday for it's time, and unpack some of its context and importance.
This is a "steel pen" from Gillott. They were sold by the gross in small paper boxes.

I'll make this a table of contents post for my steel pen posts. They seem to be reasonably popular, but I only post them periodically, so they may get buried. Here are the ones I've posted so far. I'll keep adding as I go.

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.
The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.
Why?
It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

Let's change the hue of blue we see as our option on election day. Much easier to do that then to start a whole new party. Let the GOP split themselves into Rabid (Public) Nazis and More Polite (Private) Nazis.

In my old town the GOP had run basically without serious challenge for decades. A bunch of us "millennials" joined the local Dem party and basically asked to help.
We were running it in a year. Within 4 years we had a majority of town seats flipped Dem. A FAR more progressive Dem than old party

“Rather than taking over the Democratic Party the same way the right took over the Republican Party, we should take the easier route and just start up a new party ourselves!”

I got this useful bon mot from a middle school teacher recently.
In response to, “I DONT UNDERSTAND,” he calmly said, “okay what steps have you taken to understand?”
And that’s when I realized that a lot of folks have no steps.

Hey, if he wants to get rid of risk pools and making it more of a direct government contribution, then universal, single-payer healthcare sounds like just what he's asking for.

While I don’t ride or die for Pete Buttigieg, the vitriol directed at him is completely insane.
“When I was younger I wished that I could have taken a pill to turn me straight; but I have accepted and embraced my identity now” is an *extremely* common sentiment from Millennial and older gay people!

When Pete Buttigieg says he would take medicine that makes gay men straight. What do you think is Mr. Buttigieg's attitude towards gays, men and medicine?

So cautious optimism- the kittens ate well yesterday. There’s likely a few more bumps this week, but hopefully we’ve got them on the right track.
Between the upset tummies and weaning, they all dropped weight. Cranberry dropped 70g in 4 days. So it’s been a little scary.
