Tis the season for "Best of" lists, and for me it makes sense to theme mine around music.

But because I have shown uncharacteristic restraint this year, instead of ranking my 2025 vinyl purchases, over the next few days I'll play them all, in approximate order of purchase. #VinylWrapped2025
I’m excited for the CRL opening, but this highlights the complexities of harnessing this infrastructure for best performance.
Today, Matt brings data to bear on The Great Western Line to Newmarket Question.

Which is: once the CRL opens, what's the quickest way to get to Newmarket from the west? A one-seat ride... or transfer at Karanga-a-hape?

(Spoiler: almost always the latter)

Wait. Is this why the Coalition of Climate Change Deniers is refusing to give up on fossil fuels? To suck up to Trump? 🤔 #nzpol
President Trump ordered the Pentagon to purchase more coal electricity, drawing the U.S. military into his campaign to subsidize a heavily polluting fossil fuel that is struggling to compete in the marketplace.
Trump orders Pentagon to buy coal power as the polluting fuel struggles to survive
President Donald Trump signed an order directing the Defense Department to favor electricity derived from coal, expanding his campaign to prop up the fossil fuel.

And in the case of projects that were cancelled so the Toyota Corolla version (but at 2x Ferrari prices) could be pursued instead, there should also be great big fucking photos emblazoned on them to show exactly what they could've been. #nzpol
Modest proposal: all politicians pitching massive vanity infrastructure developments that may or may not make the slightest lick of economic sense must be obliged to put their names on them like the Hoover Dam so that if they turn out to be a monumental shitshow then we all know whose fault it was

i am not hiding anything, just "made multiple repeated mistakes for 20 years" on something that's pretty damn hard to be mistaken about.

i mean when you own as many properties as these poor fuckers do it must be hard remembering all of them when it comes time to declare and register them.

Yep. Instead their attack line seems to be "If it looks like a tax..." rather than attacking whether this is even a good idea. 🤦‍♂️ #nzpol
It would be infuriatingly easy to just come out with a budgeted renewable energy policy, slap it down and challenge the govt to justify their LNG boondoggle vs the alternative. Don’t be all reasonable and nice. Tell them to put up or shut up. Hit them on their bad policies and keep hitting them.

You know when you finally receive a highly anticipated album from an artist you love and it ends up being a little underwhelming?

Well, I'm so relieved to report that this new @bigbigtrain.bsky.social is absolutely NOT that. Such an epic album, and I suspect it will be at the top of my AOTY list.

We need @chrishipkins.bsky.social to come out right now and declare that if Labour is elected this project will be cancelled on day 1. #nzpol
UNBELIEVABLE! 🤯

Luxon’s idiotic fossil gas terminal will bypass even the fast-track process so that construction can start before the election.

Let that sink in.
February 11, 2026 at 8:46 PM
Yeah nah, we understand alright.

We also understand that you're bullshitting us. It's got nothing to do with energy security and everything to do with propping up your fossil fuel donors' business model. #nzpol
Oh... LNG is just too complicated for NZers understand.

Bishop literally just said that.

It's too complicated for us to understand.

And yet we have a government doubling down on fossil fuel usage here mere weeks after having to grapple with another fatal climate change driven extreme weather event. 🤦‍♂️ #nzpol
We don't know what's happening, but there's no good news here. As long as we keep burning fossil fuels, the world will continue to become more dangerous and chaotic.
Scientists thought they understood global warming. Then the past three years happened.
The fastest warming period since 1880 occurred in the past 30 years, according to a Washington Post analysis of NASA data.

Last night's pub quiz was interesting. We thought we'd done really badly. Definitely out of the places with a score of 75 (top three are usually in the 90s and sometimes over 100).

Turns out we were tied for second, and secured that place after a tiebreaker question.

Why not spend $2.7b on solar & batteries instead?
Govt to pay up to $180m/year or $2.7b over 15 years to lease LNG re-gasification plant, paid for by $15-$30 'levy' per household per year. That $2.7b would build four Benmore Dams worth of electricity

#BHN Luxon saying "It's a charge that's levied against the electricity companies" about the LNG proposal sounds an awful lot like "China will pay the tariffs" doesn't it?

Who ultimately pays that "levy" Mr Luxon?

Bit late to it but if you want to know the chain of events that led to us importing gas (and charging electricity users to pay for it!!), I did this deep dive for RNZ last year www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

It's expensive, vulnerable to price shocks and terrible for the planet. So why are we importing gas?
