It is in the interest of tyrants to reduce the people to ignorance and vice. For they cannot live in a country where virtue and knowledge prevail. ~Samuel Adams

I feel like "academic hiring" discourse is always kind of downstream of the fact that in the 50s we started building a giant public system to make a college education almost universally available and in the 80s and 90s we started taking it apart to go back to the only-the-rich model

Books are keeping me sane. Read more last year than any previous period of my life, and I was a lit major in university.

We cannot become numb to the outrage of this. The wife of the President’s Senior Advisor threatens a sovereign nation.

How should America's occupying forces govern Venezuela? We asked four unvaccinated MAHA moms at an Amway party in Jacksonville.

You know what? This year has actually gotten off to a pretty low-key, no breaking news, stress-free start wait nevermind

if you are talking today about how bad maduro was and were alive, at all, during the run-up to the iraq war you are potentially the dumbest person to ever live

I mean, given that Congress and the Supremes aren’t up to the task, maybe our best hope for justice is The Hague. I welcome intervention by foreign governments— come get him and his brownshirted lackeys. Please! Any day now would be fine.

Most of the derangement about Mamdani is for the obvious reasons but part of it is also that a surprising amount of people were committed to the Cuomo rehabilitation project because they hated the idea that anything could have consequences for men of the right class.

Perfect description of my people. I may have grown up by the ocean in So Cal, but my parents *never* went to the beach. Too busy fixing the car or whatever. We did not talk about messy things like emotions.
i don’t remember compliments or insults. i was raised lutheran in the upper midwest. dwelling on what other people think about you takes away from time you could be spending doing valuable physical labor.
Forget insults, what’s the most unhinged *compliment* you’ve ever received?

The pod save crew is wholly irredeemable braying jackasses, but Stewart is frustrating because he consistently leads the horse to water, but then says "What can be done about thirst, really?" and shoos the horse away.

Extreme wealth begets a political power that begets policy choices that lead to even more extreme wealth concentration.

Unless basic U.S. tax policy changes, we are mathematically certain to reach a point where oligarchy becomes unbreakable.

My parent lived for 18 months *on hospice* so I’m not holding my breath. (Hoping, sure.)
Some health experts are saying that *it* could happen in the March to May timeframe. I hope it's the Ides of March, so I can say "Et tu, Tupée."

Magic Johnson was the grand marshal of the Rose Parade today, and as someone who remembers his November 1991 HIV announcement: if you had told anybody that day that he would be alive and healthy 34+ years later, I don't think they would have believed you. Medicine and research—they work.

Last year I read 275 titles. More than usual, because I have to turn myself into an entrepreneur thanks to Trump/Vaught pushing me into a dissatisfying early retirement. (Wow, do I have things to say about business books!)
Happy New Year! We love sharing these pro-book posters from the Works Projects Administration Poster Collection in the Library's Prints and Photographs Division. Of the 2,000 WPA posters known to exist, the Library of Congress's collection of more than 900 is the largest.
