Thanks to Bsky I have been reminded, very much against my will, that Toby Young exists

Also.when I worked there I would change on to the Central Line at Oxford Circus and inevitably most mornings I'd find myself getting on the train with Will Gompertz.
This has reminded me that when I worked in an office at the bottom of Ladbroke Grove, the other secretary and I would point out Famous People Parking Their Cars to each other.

(mostly her tbh, I rarely recognise anyone).
I lived and worked in Notting Hill for years without ever seeing anyone famous. My colleagues saw David Beckham around Westbourne Grove multiple times, including at a bar round the corner from the office we all often went to. A friend once served Noel Gallagher at a pub. Me? Not a single sighting.

This is a very silly headline in The Times

Please quote this with the time you didn’t interact with someone famous - eg one time I was in Cardiff the same weekend as Willem Dafoe (but I didn’t see him or even know he was there until he appeared on the telly later)

Audiences spend more time watching BBC TV/iPlayer on average per week per person than Netflix, Disney+ & Amazon Prime combined. In the first quarter of 2025, the BBC had 5 out of the 10 most watched programmes in the UK across all broadcasters and streamers.

The BBC tells the story of Britain in a way Netflix simply cannot. In the year to come, please remember that | Tony Hall
I love many shows on the streaming channels, but the BBC is our storyteller. It defines a nation and its culture – and we must defend it, says former BBC director general Tony Hall

The idea that you need to have a daughter to figure out that a relationship with an underage girl is a no-no is... well...
The idea that you need a criminal court to determine if there was something a bit wrong here is... well, let's just say anyone with a daughter doesn't find this hard to figure out.
A man in his late 20s having a sexual relationship with a 15yo girl is committing a crime under the sexual offences act 2003.

Some people claim Farage didn't know what he was doing with his teenage racism (until 18) yet insist Begum at 15 absolutely knew what she was doing. #DoubleStandards

George Clooney was walking towards me at the premiere of Batman and Robin but the Met hustled him away before he reached me.

Please quote this with your major interactions with massive celebrities. eg “I was married to the pope for fifteen years”

I find it more than a little disturbing when my phone randomly offers "New Memory For You". I never click on it, terrified I might find out I'm a sleeper agent and everything will suddenly go Total Recall on me.

Nigel Havers crossed the road in front of my car and I had to slow down to let him past.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

Can vouch for these, really easy and double-plus tasty.
Parmesan shortbreads are the perfect accompaniment to any festive fizz you may be uncorking to celebrate the New Year. They’re #RecipeOfTheDay now in case you want a get a head start on them, but they’re neither difficult nor time-consuming to make. www.nigella.com/recipes/parm...
Parmesan Shortbreads
This is an Italian-inspired recipe that comes to me from Australia via Brazil. To explain: a Brazilian friend, and the best cook I know, Helio Fenerich made it for me, and I had to keep (rudely) askin...

Kagamimochi is a traditional Japanese New Year decoration made of two stacked round rice cakes topped with a bitter orange. Displayed on a special stand, it is offered to the New Year deity in prayer for health and good fortune. After being taken down, the mochi is broken and eaten.

Oh I REALLY need to re-read this. Fantastic teacher read it to us when I was 8 or 9 and it's stayed with me.
Before long they saw in the distance the towers and flags of Dictionopolis sparkling in the sunshine, and in a few moments they reached the great wall and stood at the gateway to the city.

The very best thing about this Christmas is that I haven't gone anywhere.
The first Sunday after Christmas. The streets are empty and there are few trains running. I write you these words from the 6.25am coach to Birmingham. The driver is “a character” oh god oh god.
