If everyone read Marx, Beauvoir, and Pettit, we’d be in a better world.

The awful outcomes *are because of* the “election-winning positions”. Ability to deliver and promises made are linked!
Sure! It seems like they did a good job of adopting election-winning positions but while in office have not delivered good policy outcomes.

That’s why it’s good to have popular views on cultural issues and technocratically sound economic policy.

What’s your take?

What this underlines for me: we cannot frame "identity" in opposition to "the material" in politics when identity defines who belongs, and therefore who can engage in collective struggle for common material gains.

Pete Hegseth’s church is part of Wilson’s sect, and Hegseth has praised Wilson.
Christian Nationalist, Doug Wilson, confirms that children who don’t accept and follow their parent’s religious beliefs should be turned over to the State for capital punishment (be put to death). This fanaticism is real:

I cannot overemphasize that Marjorie Taylor Greene, Carlson, and Fuentes see a 2028 path to victory that involves building an isolationist populist coalition that traffics heavily in antisemitism and exploits existing negative sentiment against Israel.

We have to be SHARP on the left right now.

Let Mamdani show that progressive governance works by, wait for it, governing well! Provide a visible model of effectiveness that others can follow.

And maybe call it something catchy, like Propaganda of the Deed
A big part of why Mamdani won is that he actually seemed like he was interested in doing the job of mayor, and I would appreciate it if people let him focus on what is already going to be an uphill battle without demanding that he also declare war on the Democratic party.
AOC has been playing inside ball to climb the national dem party for years and this is why a lot of NY DSA now hates her; Mamdani barely just won over the NY machine, he has good reasons to not immediately start fights with the state party before he is even in power and has his people staffed.

it is almost as if accommodating and conceding to far right ideas legitimizes them and signals to voters that the far right is a legitimate choice for governance
The Danish Social Democrats are currently on course for their worst election result since at least the Second World War, despite their brand of far-right accommodationism being touted as a blueprint for other centre-left parties.

This is true and ironic considering that “we might actually make a machine, which is owned by somebody, sentient” is actually an incredible moral argument against AI research
at this point i think a lot of people have negatively polarized themselves into cartesian dualism out of spite

Not to go full Adorno here, but I feel it's part of the issue with contemporary evangelical/non-denominational/Pentecostal Christianity essentially turning a commodity: the amount of Christian AI slop and kitsch on YouTube is the other side of this, and it comes from the same impulse.
There's something just so vulgar about modern evangelical megachurches.

I am reminded of how Olivia Nuzzi's evidence for Biden's senility was that he didn't remember who she was. The kind of narcissism that gets you promoted to the upper ranks of U.S. political journalism.
The prose is incoherent & the only way to make it through a paragraph is to rely on the North Star or her self-pitying narcissism. The gist of this graf is “strangers obsess about me, must be because I work so hard,” but it is almost immediate lost in the morass of “typed on notes app while hiking”

MTG is and will remain, until the end of her days, an enemy of liberty, equality, and justice. At present, she is a useful enemy, pitting herself against a more immediately threatening force. Anyone who confuses this momentary detente with camaraderie is a dolt or a coward.

I believe the purpose of education is to help everyone create a healthy, informed, curious, and compassionate society.
A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

Have been mulling this over, and it seems to me that AI is the ultimate technology at the End of History. The prevailing ideology is secured by automated reproduction of itself, drowning out alternatives by sheer volume. Creative expression, too, is eliminated in favor of reheated consumption.
I do, of course, have a paragraph from "Why We Fear AI" for this

One simple police reform is to have lawsuit payments come out of police budgets.
Behave or defund yourself.
BREAKING: The City Council voted unanimously to pay $17M to a man who spent 27 years in prison after he was convicted of a double murder he did not commit, bringing the total cost of settling 9 lawsuits naming disgraced former CPD Detective Reynaldo Guevara to $112M, records show. @wttw.bsky.social
Cost to Resolve Lawsuits Tied to Disgraced Ex-CPD Detective Tops $112M, with 44 Lawsuits Pending
Chicago taxpayers have spent at least $285.3 million to resolve lawsuits alleging Chicago police officers committed a wide range of misconduct — including wrongful convictions and improper pursuits — ...
