They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

OP thinks AI is conscious and should be allowed to vote but also wants to make it write emails and pick his wife’s Christmas present for eternity
it’s hard to think of a bigger grift than the claim that predictive text aka gAI is ‘conscious’ and thus “deserve rights” like the ability to vote

This is the @radcliffescilib.bsky.social's Worry Box.

Students are invited to write down a worry and post it anonymously. The worries are then shredded and sent to the Botanic Gardens, where it is used as fertiliser.

A simple way to acknowledge stress and transform it into something positive. 🪴

I want to destroy the notion that STEM, humanities and arts, are seperate units of knowledge and skill. And if you do one, you can't do other. I am a geologist, professional artist and trained in international relations. They all compliment each other.
Anyway. They spent the last decade telling us STEM degrees were the future and the Humanities were worthless then they spent hundreds of billions of dollars to build a glitchy Humanities robot.

Why is there all this money to go to Mars, but no money to fix all the amazing 19th century pipe organs that can no longer be played because they need hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs? We know how to fix organs. We don’t know how to colonize Mars. Let’s focus on what we know how to do.

Like how Nate Silver predicts elections
A type of practice that I find interesting historically is the rigorously untrue. Astrology, for instance, was often a very tightly defined practice with a seriously requirement of learning: it just wasn’t actually real.

tbh a lot of marketing right now comes off as contemptuous to vaguely menacing. A lot of “here’s your slop, idiots”
One of the pervasive themes in betting ads seems to be contempt for their audience.

This is rank nonsense. Even if future iterations of generative AI can read handwriting in a wide variety of languages and handle drift in meaning, only a small fraction of archival material will have been digitized and described.
