Apologies to anyone legitimately in need, but I'm blocking any "I'm from Gaza, please donate at gofundme" accounts. I've no way to verify you are. For those affected you have my deepest sympathies, and I hope my monthly Amnesty International and UNICEF donations go towards making life better for you
I've been thinking lately about "information redundancy" i.e. the amount of information presented to us daily that we don't read and can safely ignore. Adverts, shop names, street signs, nutritional information, travel info... all of it presumably useful/vital to someone, somewhere, but not for...
My entire job is writing things (forms, guidance, advice and so on for government, charities, police, NHS) in a way people are more likely to read and understand and I can categorically tell you that most people do not read most things no matter how critical they are.

Calling it now: a minister has a financial interest in a chain of pawn shops
Imagine having a thumping majority in parliament and deciding to use it for something as squalid as this.

There isn't much that shocks me these days in the shark tank that is immigration policy but a Labour government promising to *confiscate jewelry* from refugees has genuinely stunned me. Needlessly, pointlessly, uselessly cruel, and that Mahmood believes this to be a vote-winner is nauseating.
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

The western media's failure to report the reality of Gaza didn’t start on 7 October 2023. It’s always been like this.

Breaking free of media group-think is a scary, lonely journey. I know. I was forced to do it

The BBC is the biggest thump of soft power the UK has and its reach and influence to the benefit of the country is extraordinary. Destroy it, hugely damage the UK. The same people who helped weaken us over Brexit are seeking to do it again.
Interesting to see so many great British patriots right now begging an American president to bankrupt one of Britain’s last remaining truly national institutions.

This (and the rest of this thread) is a beautiful tonic.
A quick little throwaway tune in RUTLAND WEEKEND TELEVISION from the late, great Neil Innes.

I'd love to hear various artists cover this ditty in concert... (Which artist will take up the challenge first?)

Asterix and the magic potion... was it this bad in the original French? Because the dialogue in the English translation feels rushed and unnatural

I'm not one of those people who know loads about trains or the tube. I only know one, random trivial fact, from years ago: The only tube stop not to contain any of the letters from the word 'Badger' is Pimlico.
Just had a moment of panic that the Elizabeth Line might've changed that, but - phew - no

A friend of mine described me last night as "the most straight-laced person they know". I felt a bit affronted. I may be a straight married man in a monogamous relationship whose kinks involve normal straight sex, but... some of my t-shirts are quirky!
I'm WAY more bohemian than my in-laws!

My most woke opinion is that "woke" at root is a beautiful concept: active socio-political consciousness in the context of the Black American liberation struggle. And the way it's been turned into a sneering pejorative is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen in Western political discourse.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

This, from the Quakers, is a pretty good example of how to resist pressure from bigot lobbying groups. Effectively “we legally can allow trans people to use the loo, we morally should, and we tried it and nothing bad happened”

A thought... there's been scores of evening chat shows over the years. Wogan, Ross, Norton etc etc. Has there ever been one fronted by a woman?

I know there's been daytime ones, especially stateside, but I can't think of an evening one
