its striking that we have beliefs here that are not too removed from that of middle ages peasants
I'm just going to say a thing.

What a person looks like is not reflective of their soul. Insulting the appearance of bad people who do bad things as an outcome or indication of their rotten hearts perpetuates the notion that conventional beauty = virtue, a myth that's led to untold human damage.

going back to @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social’s point that many politicians and their advisors would probably benefit from having some political beliefs themselves
I mean. What is the point of a political strategist, or indeed a politician, let alone an actual government if their approach is to do what ‘the voters think’?

I am very disappointed that people are doing culture wars on this, and I’m also very irritated by the people arguing that this doesn’t matter. I think there’s a certain amount of unconscious misogyny at play - it is actually an important part of the life of the church with a considerable impact.

I don't agree with everything here, but I strongly agree with its underlying premise:

Much online political discourse lacks a sense of how the non-politically engaged view the world, and thus misses the gap between their use of words like "corruption" and what the broader public means by it.
Voters take an extremely expansive view of corruption that borders on the idea that any disagreement about policy is per se corrupt.

It is so easy to just say "Innocent people in Gaza are caught in the middle of a conflict between two groups of people who both suck tremendously", but for various reasons, a certain kind of person does not want to say that.

queer, because it's 1 syllable instead of 6 (seriously the reason)
I'm kinda curious about something;

If you're LGBTQ+/queer, do you prefer LBTQ+ or queer as a generalized umbrella term for us? Why one or the other?

No judgement and not trying to start a debate, just kinda curious

basically the same, plus also... "queer" intentionally blurs boundaries in a way that *is queer*. if you have to ASK, that opens up a conversation that may be productive or informative. 'Queer' does not exclude anyone, even if queers can be, themselves, as exclusionary as any group.

storytelling is a very elegantly simple kind of magic. all you have to do is take the idea that interests you most and then try to make it both interesting and dramatically compelling for the entirety of the narrative. that's it. that's all you have to do. every good thing you know of did this.

There’s always room for more focus on how debate is bad and has damaged our discourse. It also completely misunderstands how scholars and scholarly work gets communicated and revised.

the magic of the Muppets is that there are two fourth walls. they constantly break the one that reminds the audience they are performers. they NEVER break the one that reminds the audience they are puppets. this dynamic is the key to their entire comedy style
MY KIDS: so why are there muppets in the AUDIENCE

ME: THE CONCEIT!! IS THAT THEY'RE PUTTING ON A VARIETY SHOW!!! IN A WORLD WHERE MUPPET AND HUMAN COEXIST!!! YOU ARE WATCHING A DOCUMENTARY!! FILMED!! IN REAL TIME!!!

We live in a new age of superstition and witch-hunts, where legend and myth and rumor are as real to the masses as proven fact, enabled by a digital dreamscape where any idea that seizes people emotionally quickly generates its own evidence and community of true believers. Many examples. Bad for all

People like to do this thing where they’re like “If you successfully argue X, you’ll win the election.” This is just not how anything works! One hundred million Americans are not waiting to hear your answer to this narrow question! Also, the actual winner made no such case!
Why are we out here trying to defend Kamala Harris. She had a shit campaign because she didn't sell herself.on making a difference in anyone's lives. THAT is why people didn't vote for her. She would be the EXACT same as a second Biden term and working class people just checked out. Nothing for them
Kamala Harris ran a good, very aggressive campaign, but started at a significant deficit, and ran headlong into a ocean of misogyny, which has continued to dog her even more post-election, now that people feel empowered to say what they REALLY think about her

I think Zohran understands, unlike a lot of his very online supporters, that actually running a functional NYC administration is going to be a lot more effective victory for "the Left" than anything else he can do, and that doing that is in no way, shape, or form something you can take for granted.
it is, to me, insane that people mad at Zohran for endorsing Hochul without explicit promises in her *primary* are also just pretending that other *primaries* aren't happening and he's stuck with this state leg. No, he's not! this is to help ensure Hochul doesn't block anything
