Programming note: I am staying on top of this (I don’t really have an excuse, it’s almost in my geographic backyard) and I just want to note how shocking it is how much this small Ohio city of Springfield is being terrorized right now and Trump’s ICE invasion hasn’t even landed yet

Shuge.org now seems to be storing all their woodblock scans on Baidu and Alibaba's file-sharing services, which would suck even if I were currently in the PRC and are borderline unusable outside it

Shout-out to SEPTA: never thought an hour-long Amtrak delay out of 30th Street could be a nail-bitingly suspenseful experience, but the unreported delay on the El made it happen, and that last-minute twist of running the train on the wrong track without announcing it was sheer art

Just back from an early screening of 'Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die,' which is a lot of fun, has some really outstanding moments (especially in the first two acts), and ends a few minutes after it should

Y’all, I’m losing my mind over here. I need everyone to read this article. I can’t go it alone!!!

“Epstein argues that teaching children to write may be harmful because writing forces “linear” and “narrow” patterns of thinking, whereas the greatest thinkers never wrote.”
“The interview also becomes an exercise in intellectual peacocking as they invoke Socrates, Isaac Newton and quantum physics but pay little attention to Epstein’s crimes. Epstein reveals himself to be a living museum of racial prejudice.”

I’m doing Du Fu’s 秋日阮隱居致薤三十束 and can’t think of a way of handling 關鬲冷 in the penultimate line that doesn’t sound like ass. (Owen has “my viscera are cold,” so at least I’ve got company.)
Any ideas?

@thomasgermain.bsky.social Are you aware that Google Books has effectively stopped working - the material is still there, but all search functions no longer seem to work, making fresh access impossible. Can't find any reportage on this but it seems a major story with huge implications..

I'm reading these notes on the art of translation and I'm just going YES THIS! So I'm sharing for everyone else.
Emily Wilson’s notes on her translation are really interesting reading, even without a background in Mediterranean classics — this actually makes me a lot more interested in the Nolan version than I would’ve been!

I never claimed to be a leader of anything, and I’m not, I’ve been doing what thousands of other Minnesotans have been doing. With that said I know why it’s working because I SEE IT WORK: because the observers are disciplined, committed, nonviolent, and open. Their channels are open and HUGE.
