Imagine being so boring and awful a person that you complain about googly eyes. I know of 2 ppl at work who put them on things. It's delightful.
I've been sticking googly eyes on bulletin boards, posters, computer screens etc in work for 3 years. There's recently been "flash alerts" at start of shift saying whoever is doing it to stop & HR are getting involved. Do I continue or quit while my identity is still a mystery?

Look I've been suicidal & not only that I've come to terms with the fact I'll always struggle with suicidal ideation. Those feelings crest & peak & people commit the act opportunistically at a low, when if they'd stuck around they'd see they felt better just a bit later. So yes ChatGPT is killing.

Long Island deserves a Representative who fights for working families and stands up to Trump’s attacks. Meanwhile, Andrew Garbarino can’t even wake up to vote.

I'm running for Congress because I know we can fight our way out of this. Be a day 1 donor: secure.actblue.com/donate/garre...

Late starting snow and ice storm once again proving that my office is perfectly capable of running with most people working from home for the day. All supervisors encouraged safety first for all of us.

If an academic library can do it, your corporate job certainly can.

I love that I get to sing some amazing works sometimes, but then I never get to sing them again. All that work for one or two performances.

Today I'm feeling a need to sing Alexander Nevsky again. I really need to scream sing battle music in Russian to cope with life these days.

Between the Islamophobia, the anti-Semitism, the racism, and the homophobia -- it must be so bizarre to be afraid of basically everyone, all the time

Pure loser shit

When I heard that Guillermo del Toro was making Frankenstein, I was so excited. I adore Del Toro's monsters, his love and care for them. And Frankenstein is one of my favorite stories. I watched it online tonight and it did not disappoint. He didn't disappoint & it is a beautiful film. 1/4

me: a guy here was arrested for assaulting a woman while he was cosplaying as a nazi officer

Dad: what is cosplay

me: *explains*

Dad: sounds like a nazi who stopped "cosplaying" as a normal person

This man's ability to randomly say insightful thing while also putting cosplay in quotes is a trip

The thing about the relentless march of time is that you only get an ending (happy or otherwise) in fiction. Here in the real world no cause is ever lost forever even though we may not live to see it prevail. This is both hope and cautionary tale.
"This fucking sucks" and "all is lost" are two different sentences.

Don't say the second when you mean the first.

I'm not even a creative and I am so tired of having to turn off all these features. I want my emails to sound like ME, not a language model. I want to note in the minutes what I know that my colleagues will need in them later. Let me turn this shit OFF.

I cannot emphasize enough how much the folks at Census are *obsessed* with doing the right thing for both representative data collection and privacy. (I say this as someone who nearly didn’t get to tenure because of all the frictions involved in using restricted-access Census data.)
US census data is carefully anonymized for good reason. Now Republicans want to change that -- and their plan could put the data of every person living in the US at risk.

The Republican Plan to Reform the Census Could Put Everyone’s Privacy at Risk
A little-known algorithmic process called “differential privacy” helps keep census data anonymous. Conservatives want it gone.

Can attest to T. Kingfisher books as well. Her horror is delightfully creepy and her fantasy is fun with excellent world building.
Two books for spooky season:
COFFIN MOON, Keith Rosson: Best modern vampire story ever (although it's set in the 70s).
THE TWISTED ONES, by T. Kingfisher: It lures you in with chatty good humor (especially about NPR Pledge Week) and a lovely dog...then slams the door and bites you in the dark.

I try to remember that while they were fighting the ban on gender affirming care for minors here, one of the (trans) lawyers did a thread reminding folks that they're really good at making this feel like an overwhelming groundswell, but it is one clown car of debunked experts on a road trip.
26,000 YouTube views for Sinclair’s Charlie Kirk tribute special.

Just for comparison, Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue on any average Wednesday will get between two and four MILLION YouTube views.

Right wing culture is fringe stuff. It is not American culture by any stretch.
Everything about this headline is hilarious. And the YouTube views are a reflection of how wildly the right has overblown the number of people paying attention.

Allowing myself this one whinge of the day:
Tech is often not backwards compatible for many reasons incl. capitalism, but is it really so much to ask that the usb c to 3.5mm adapter I bought 3 yrs ago work on a modern mobile phone? Am I really asking so much?

Ok, today will be beautiful, LFG.

Talking with colleagues and I realized that I have a professional version of the millennial box of mystery cables that I've been moving around for years "just in case" I need them. Except it's all random cables AND peripherals and like three of us have stashes. 😩

Everything is bad, but books are good. Get a book. Read the book. Cherish the book. Finish the book. Tell your friends about the book, and leave a review of the book. Hold the book close. Listen to what it tells you. Do as it commands. Place it on the dread altar and let it guide your every choice.

At a town hall meeting in Iowa this morning, Republican Senator Joni Ernst was asked about cuts to Medicaid and someone yelled: “people are going to die.”

Her smirky response: "WELL, we're ALL going to die."

The same people who believed Democrats were creating death panels are supporting this...
