Relistened to this @michaelhobbes.bsky.social gem: “Which scenario makes more sense: 100s of thousands of public health workers around the world recommended a bunch of steps that they know are ineffective, or is it more likely that two people without the relevant expertise are mis-reading a report?”

Not really sure you can recover as a country with this out in the open corruption. Usually this stuff happens in countries that don't have functioning elections or a tradition of law and order. But the electorate is basically checked out on millionaires and billionaires committing robbing them.

this post has been RT-ed into my feed a few times and I didn't read it because it looked like normal "not into AI" stuff, but I did and really, really enjoyed it anthonymoser.github.io/writing/ai/h...

this seems specifically designed to break mail-in voting (where deadlines are defined by postmark)
As of 12/24/25, USPS changed policy on when they postmark mail. Mail dropped off is no longer guaranteed a same-day postmark. Tax returns & other time-sensitive items are now stamped when they reach a regional processing center, which may be days later. Plan deadlines accordingly to avoid penalties.

it's genuinely fascinating to me that "you cannot facilitate a genocide against a people and still expect their vote" is too advanced for some analysts to understand.

An essential development over the past decade-plus is that the ignorant went from feeling chastened when their ignorance was revealed to banding together and deciding that, actually, they were right. They might disagree at times, but they agreed that ignorance itself was an indicator of trust.

Cousin called my mom, not knowing who else to call, panicked because she closed a Google Docs tab, and she couldn't find it anywhere

I happened to be home and overhear and taught her Ctrl-Shift-T, and she nearly cried
I remember sitting down to help a colleague finishing her PhD (20+ years ago). I hit control down to get to bottom of column of data and she started crying. Didn’t know you could do that, and when you’re working 100hr weeks to finish those 5min spent holding the down key are painful.

Every model in the field is storytelling built on the assumptions that a) human beings are perfectly informed, b) they are rational, and c) ceteris paribus (consider changes in variables as if no other variables changed).

These are *never* true

A type of practice that I find interesting historically is the rigorously untrue. Astrology, for instance, was often a very tightly defined practice with a seriously requirement of learning: it just wasn’t actually real.

Those two weeks of that one summer in Montana 25 years ago were absolutely treacherous, and my parents nearly divorced after that trip, but the peace and awe I felt about the stars every night opposite-of-haunt me till this day
If you ever have the experience of seeing a night sky out in the deep countryside you can understand this; it really is a fundamentally different experience, and I can't imagine it not being formative to people.

Just fuck you. Fuck you all.

funny thing about coding and AI is that for years if you told people to invest in learning their editor, using a more powerful editor, or even basic typing speed, they'd always look a bit proud and say "my utility isn't blocked by *typing*"

but for a *lot* of LLM use cases, that's the benefit!
