Demographic Transition
In Japan, there are approximately two deaths for every birth—

Forty years ago in Japan, two babies were born for every person who died. Twenty years ago, these numbers were equal. And today, the ratio has reversed: one baby is born for every two people who die.

In a study published today, researchers reported that the ideal conditions for major wildfires are now aligning across different parts of the world at more than double the rate they did 50 years ago.

Sitting in a Baltimore bar… Bill noted the cold temperatures to refute climate change and Obama suggesting ET exists.

It’s been a great day.
True story
Former president Barack Obama appeared to drop an otherworldly bombshell: extraterrestrials exist.

Obama largely walked back his remarks, suggesting that he was offering a pithy response and that he was simply performing cosmic math. https://wapo.st/4rmz1PA

Colbert is being cancelled in May (2026). Until then, dude is going to rage 🔥

Don’t share this.
This is the interview Donald Trump didn’t want you to see.

His FCC refused to air my interview with Stephen Colbert.

Trump is worried we’re about to flip Texas.

I'll talk with @jaimepalter.bsky.social and @jfrancisclimate.bsky.social Wed at 1 ET, hosted by the Solutions Journalism Network and URI. How is climate change affecting winter weather extremes? How we can improve resilience to winter storms? Intended for climate journalists but all are welcome.

Forever chemicals disqualify Olympic athletes.
Several Olympic athletes were disqualified after their skis and snowboards tested positive for traces of PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” which have been banned at the Games for the first time this year because of their damage to the environment and the human body.
Three Olympic Athletes Were Just Disqualified for a Novel Reason: PFAS
Their skis and snowboards tested positive for “forever chemicals,” slippery-but-dangerous chemicals now banned in the Games.

More work to do but take the smooth with the crunchy.
As expected, in the final rule, EPA's Endangerment Finding repeal backs down entirely from challenging the science, choosing to focus on statutory arguments regarding EPA's authority. Good work, everyone who contributed to the @andrewdessler.com review!

As I say here, there is no scientific justification to revoke the engagement finding. In fact, over the last 15+ yrs, the evidence of how climate change affects our health has only grown. Higher risk of allergies, dementia, fertility, heart disease, and death: that’s what’s on the line. @nature.org
There is No Scientific Justification to Revoke the Endangerment Finding
The U.S. EPA's decision to repeal the Endangerment Finding will limit the government's ability to regulate emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

And it’s us.
I’m unconvinced (and @ccallahan45.bsky.social’s has analysis that supports this) this can’t be explained by the rate of greenhouse gas emissions. But anyways, striking article in the same issue in which the editorial board supports EPA’s repeal of the funding that GHGs endanger health and welfare

The fastest warming period since 1880 occurred in the past 30 years, according to a Washington Post analysis of NASA data.
