Just came across a pre-print paper that analyzes an AI boyfriend subreddit. There are images from the subreddit that appear to be real people. (Since you can use generative AI to create a new image based on a photo.) There's an ethics statement: "public subreddits carry no privacy expectations" :-\

It is so, so important to learn to understand the difference between A Gross Thing That Freaks Me Out, versus A Thing Which Causes Actual Harm In The World
because as long as you can't navigate the difference, your disgust is a lever that can be used to manipulate you

I missed the detail that Mark Carney ditched the luxury tax on private jets, yachts, and vehicles over $100,000 in the budget, though I also can’t say I’m surprised.

Okay, two things:
First, I was trying to search for this image and got this Yelp page as the first result. The internet is doomed.
Second, I misremembered the name of this artist as "They Eat Babies?" and thought this might have been advertising for a show.

The thing about Mamdani is that he’s a talented politician but not otherworldly or one in a billion, he’s just a competent guy with popular ideas who ran against an entitled piece of shit and to me it’s a lot more optimistic to imagine 1000 campaigns like his than to view him as a unique phenomenon

The Fable is pretty fun and you can set up some really nice combos, but listen: don't give me a series of 12-panel grids and then ask me to fill every panel. There's no room for mood in these layouts? No vibes? We're just maximizing???

I sent and received email by writing it on a floppy disk and walking that floppy disk to the Soroos foundation offices where they sent email to Bucharest once a day. I taught computer classes at the freedom forum library in Bucharest. They had a VAX and I taught people how to use gopher.

When I read Autonomous, Annalee Newitz's 2017 sci-fi novel about biohacking and robots, shortly after it came out, I felt the least believable part was that there was a train to UBC.
There's still no train!
