Formerly CJ, Shadax, or Chimera_Brain elsewhere online. I post a lot of adequately painted miniatures, old PlayStation games, and some leftist nonsense. Usually nice.

Normally I’d let this sort of thing just die out but an alarming amount of you have asked where you can buy this and my wife had to have an emergency surgery the day before I made this, so here is my chance to live the American Dream (selling print-on-demand shirts to pay down medical debt)

Once again thinking about columbo villains dot com, the only website where you can buy throw pillows and t-shirt dresses with the pictures and last words of the villain from every episode of Columbo

I think the one time I actually played a PS2 game online was Champions of Norrath several years later. I had exactly one friend that played FFXI and lots of friends under split custody agreements spending every other weekend watching their dad’s neck veins bulge out in SOCOM 2 lobbies.

This post was formed by me still chewing on a minor theme of his letters being his opinion that the internal combustion engine (specifically, the airplane) was the ultimate expression of “the potency of the Original Sin” and extrapolating that to how he’d feel about, well, everything about Now.

So, as I was saying, there doesn't seem to be much evidence about what was on Tolkien's mind when he was writing The Hobbit, in particular about the issue of aerial warfare. For example, I don't know ...

Almost certainly, yes. The real question is would he have hated them or the Bashki movies more?

I was pretty glib in the original post but I think he lived in a truly fascinating time to be a career philologist, and while I kind of doubt it I think it’s possible that he could appreciate how quickly his own creation got away from him and iterated into something unrecognizable.

Traveling back in time to play JRR Tolkien four seconds of black metal while looking at a single frame of Deedlit to watch him instantly explode.

Do you ever think about how much Tolkien, a curmudgeonly conservative career scholar who accidentally invented modern fantasy as an incidental byproduct of his passion for exploring the evolution of language and cultural storytelling, would fucking hate everything that he inspired?

Something you don’t see discussed a lot with American PS2 nostalgia was the absolute stranglehold SOCOM 2 multiplayer had on Gen X dads. If you had opinions on David Lee Roth vs Sammy Hagar, this was your Halo.

I was in high school and never actually saw anyone my age playing it. It was always the one game someone’s dad played on the PS2 in the den.

Freeing Clint Mansell from Darren Aronofsky’s basement to lead the charge once more like a rapture specifically for the one good contribution the British have made to pop music in the last 35 years.

people online are always talking about wanting to go back to "PS2 aesthetics" yet I don't think they truly understand that such a desire must inevitably coincide with and include a revival of big beat

I missed out on three entries in the Gobl[iii/ii/i]ns series and wondering how they got back to two is in the title when by series tradition we should be at negative two playable goblins.

A quick five off the dome:
Belle and Sebastian - Disc 1 of Push Barman To Open Old Wounds (which collects their 3 EPs released that year)
Guided by Voices - Mag Earwhig!
Future Bible Heroes - Memories of Love
Bis - The New Transistor Heroes
The Jayhawks - Sound of Lies

My daughter had a weird homophobic teacher in daycare and it took one episode of Is It Cake? with some “boy husbands” to completely undo that programming.

I know this guy just needs to flee LA but I like to imagine he’s chronically 15 years behind on trends and is ditching pick up artistry to get break into the lucrative mom and pop meth business after watching season one of Breaking Bad

Trying to make my kids love comics the way I did: giving them a single TPB each from the middle of Mage and the very end of Preacher at way too young of an age and having them try to figure out what the hell is happening by poring over them repeatedly like partially lost sacred texts.

The first one holds up really well! Arguably it implements the cruft of early Rainbow Six games better than most of the official console ports those received by giving into the tiniest bit of arcade streamlining.
