I hope the backbenchers hold their nerve on opposing this depraved plan concocted by the most wicked government department in the UK and a cabinet of contemptible, mewling moral cowards.

We're basically just rerunning the entire Brezhnev era, waiting for a Gorbachev to put us out of our misery

I hate repeating my own childhood, I'm too old for this
What I'm experiencing is the continuation of the Johnson-era malaise. The keenness of paying lip service to the imaginary Telegraph and Express audience that the focus groups are masquerading as. The tinkering around the edges of public finances for no goal or aim but to remain in power a bit longer

Note: The pastor being thrown to the ground and arrested here while protesting outside an ICE facility here — who police single out — appears to be Rev. Michael Woolf, a Baptist pastor (he’s ordained by both American Baptist Churches USA and Alliance of Baptists).
at one point, i watched a cook county sheriff’s officer (who appears to be in charge) point out a priest in the crowd.

he and a couple officers then went into the crowd , dragged him into the street, and arrested him.

situation is still tense as crowd jostles with police to get into the street.

Wow, dying to see how the “vote Labour or you’ll get Reform” crowd who so delight us on here are going to spin this
Obviously we’ll have to see the detail rather than the press briefing, but it’s not immediately obvious how a policy in which the public interest always trumps family life, or where a risk of inhuman treatment has to be balanced against the public interest, could possibly be consistent with the ECHR

There might be some truth in this, but I think it understates the government’s achievement, which is to have synthesised the worst aspects of all three of the Blairite, Old Right, and Soft Left traditions
I voted for Ed Miliband and I'd do it again, but I think it is important to be realistic and accept that this goverment's instincts are basically Milibandist. A particularly unserious version of Milibandism, but Milibandism nevertheless.

In Labour's case it is to do a racism.

Sickening rhetoric by Home Secretary. Denying access to human rights isn't "protecting the public". This is Labour further demonising those seeking asylum in language very reminiscent of the far right. Yes, some break the law, so should be prosecuted within the law. Removing rights is not the answer

Defunding scientists for the nationality of who they co-author with or who they train.

One of the most radical attack on freedom of speech in US history. A far right nationalist destruction of US science. Such a shameful time to be an American that this racist stupidity has become mainstream.
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”

i’m proud to have studied and worked with many chinese public health scientists over the years. this red scare bullshit is unjust, bigoted, and utterly self-destructive
The only way we will win a better world is not only leftism for America, but internationalism. “Researchers who have anything to do with China should have their careers ended” is a bipartisan position, and it can’t be anymore. If we live in a fragmented world, it will burn in our lifetime
