Officials are trying to convince me that implementation of these strategies is being taken very seriously. Ministers clearly aren't doing so. A missed opportunity and a symbol of dysfunction.

Biggest problem with the Industrial and Trade Strategy both is there's no evidence either will set a direction throughout government, they are worthy statements unlikely to be really followed through. All part of the government's general lack of direction.

So bear in mind that when Labour are calling for these changes, what they mean is that it’s ok for some people to be treated inhumanly, as long as they’re migrants, and that some families should be destroyed, again as long as 1 or more of them is a migrant, no matter what the effect on the children

As to inhuman treatment, that’s prohibited (alongside torture) by Article 3 ECHR, again incl situations where expulsion would expose the person to it. That‘s an absolute right: no balancing exercise. Why? Because inhuman treatment is never acceptable, migrants are humans and, importantly, so are we

To be clear, Article 8 ECHR already permits interference with family life in the public interest, incl in the immigration context, if that’s proportionate. That involves a careful balancing exercise: neither side automatically prevails. Requiring the public interest to always prevail isn’t possible

It also ignores the reality of an unstable world and ignores that not all asylum seeking people are fleeing war - as well as ignoring that even if a war ends, the country might not be safe for everyone to go home to (even if they want to).

While there has been excellent reporting on SA at AFCm this is, AFAIK, the first time anyone has looked at how boys face physical violence & bullying at extreme levels in AFC
