THIS! Also I get more of a thrill seeing my book in a library than in a bookshop I reckon....
It's PLR statement day! Massive thanks to the 1010 people who borrowed Out Of The Woods and Men At War from their local libraries this past year. Often feels like people don't realise that we get paid when people borrow books from libraries, but we do, and it is hugely appreciated x

In defiance of rules, Michael tried to jump on the kitchen bin last night. She was not aware it was emptied and lidless.

It's not often you get to say you were right, especially when so many people were screaming rhat I was wrong.

For four years I said this would fail. And it has.

I'm sad for the impact these losses will have. I'm sad that this money could've been spent on literally anything else better.

This should be the policy on all public transport. I've come across absolute bafflement when I've suggested to people that perhaps listening to something out loud isn't ok (usually phrased as 'Do you have headphones? Because everyone else can hear what you're listening to.' in a helpful tone)
National Express are very strict about the lack of using headphones when using mobiles. People are threatened to be chucked off. Not once have I seen/heard pushback. Of course, it's the 2nd driver who can go up to passengers and inform them to comply or else.

I’m telling you, this is a line we should not allow to be blurred.

Assert that what has been done is illegal.
Have it investigated as illegality.
Bring prosecutions of company officials on illegality.

Describe the basis of each step clearly and without obfuscation or imprecision.
Without meaningful pushback from regulators and users, Grok’s example risks setting a permissive precedent—signaling to other nudification apps and platform companies that AI-generated NCII can be treated as funny, harmless, or otherwise tolerable, writes Kaylee Williams.

I did not know this was a thing. Sounds like a fun idea to me. Read the replies below for more.
i think more indie bookshops should bring back offering to stamp the inside cover of books for customers. Love to find a secondhand book with a Foyles stamp in, eg. Feels special!

Thanks to everyone who's supported ALD so far! If you can share this thread so that we reach more people, I'd be very grateful. I'd love to be able to cover my (minimal) wages for this month and next if at all possible!
Last year, nearly one hundred people donated to ensure I could move the Ada Lovelace Day website to a new hosting platform, go to four events, and run ALD online in October.

With the arrival of a New Year, though, comes the need for a new fundraiser:

There's a cat living at one of my sister's neighbours that visits her house daily - he has worked out that he can reach up to her letterbox cover and flick it with his paw, so he actually *knocks* to be let in

Fine during the day

Less so when she hears him knocking at 3am

Just imagine - you’re a cat, with presumably a house, but you ignore that house and come instead to *my* house, and you walk in like you own the place, and come and go as you please and do whatever you like whenever you like. Just imagine how smug you’d be. Pretty smug? Not as smug as this bastard.

Reform is a private Limited company majority-owned by one man, in the interests of making money for that man and the shareholders.

We should casually talk about the inevitability of a Reform government the same way we’d talk about casually selling the country to Dyson or Wetherspoons.
I keep seeing people on the left talking as if Reform are a shoo-in for the next government, and I beg you, please don't do that. If we on the left talk about them as if their victory is inevitable, it will become inevitable. Every time we talk about a Reform government, we legitimise that idea...

Also, the next GE is miles off. This is the same as people obsessing over seat projections. Not only will a lot change before voting matters, people's vote changes when it actually matters.

I've got a format which I keep using in the hope it catches on: make the first post a thread title with just the necessary information, like BOOK EVENTS THREAD. Then when it appears at the top each time, there's less to get annoyed by. It's like books where the title appears at the top of each page.

The single biggest thing (in cost terms) I’ve changed my mind about is UK tuition fees. Dreadful system, need to scrap it.
This is clearly depressing and radicalising in a way a tax wouldn't have been.
