When ever there is any major story in the news with any political impact ask a single two parted question:
Who is telling me this, and why does it matter to them?

The BBC story is from a particular group and serves them well.

SUPERB and angrily unvarnished response, by former BBC chairman, Lord Patten.

I fucking hate this thing of having a mid-season break for two months in US TV shows, especially when it ends on a cliffhanger. Either make the fucking season work in a single run, or delay it.

Wrote an update on my eco-comedy project, Fieldwork, last week. Had my first table read ever last month, now need to listen closely to the recording and rewrite the script. I also have a few interesting events coming up this autumn. Read more:

I really enjoyed writing this piece about the importance of small green spaces to biodiversity for @katebevan.com and the Friends of Brompton Cemetery Magazine. If you're nearby, print copies will be available soon from the visitor centre.

The BBC, both as a radio broadcaster, and a TV broadcaster, didn’t start out doing news at all. News is the upstart department. Its job is to act as a national fireplace. And that’s properly vital now, more than ever.
I reckon a shared national popular culture is just as important (if not more important) than a fact based, impartial news service for liberal democracy to work.

Excellent thread on why it's so important that the BBC be rescued, perhaps by making all senior appointments apolitical and getting rid of Tory appointments, ditching false balance, and prioritising evidence-based news journalism that explains stuff in clear terms...
Quick thread on the BBC and the political and societal significance of recent developments:

One of the main reasons the UK has historically been so much less polarised than the US, is that Britain has a shared source of information, consumed and trusted by most people regardless of their politics.

Aaah, back to dealing with Stablepoint's tech support. *sigh*

All I want is a subdomain with a working WP installation I can actually access. Is that too much to ask?

I'm generally not one to give feedback to organisations I've crossed paths with, but I did feel compelled to send a couple of praise-filled emails to Theatr Cymru and Shakespeare's Globe about the amazing Welsh/English Romeo a Juliet. Without doubt, some of the best Shakespeare I've ever seen.

The loss of soft power through the diminution of the BBC’s global presence is criminal.

Perhaps try reading this, written by Sharon Begley in 2021 before she died, as a counter to all the "Oh, Watson wasn't really sexist or racist. His denigration of Franklin was a bit to show that biology was fun, and hey, he went to Africa!" hagiographies.

The worst thing about this is that Coca-Cola is a rich company. Its market cap is £300bn, it has nearly £11bn cash on hand. The cost of real animators wouldn't even be a rounding error. They have literally no reason to use AI to make their Christmas ad.
Mirroring the video here if you don't want to even humor going onto Twitter, but when it gets into the "process" section, there's so many red flags of them lying about the work they put into the commercial that reveal how much of this video is them trying and lying after the fact.
