this is amazing news - the HPV vaccine promises to eliminate cervical cancer in countries where uptake is high.

Great day at the Communicate conference about comms in the environmental industry in London today. Though depressing to see yet another industry in distress.

Grabbed ten mins to #WriteDespite being on the train, so have written despitten.

I almost never go into London but the trains are so often fucked, just as they are this morning.

This thread. Also: at my (upper/mid) level, all I'm hearing is "make your own thing." I've been doing that for 20 years. It's been a nice way to supplement my scattered income from selling scripts. But to make something, you need to pay the people helping you (at a certain point). So, who funds it?
Said with love but there is a tone deafness in the "just write your spec!" advice that seems to be totally ignored in the current climate.

It works if you're repped. If reps are taking new clients. If places are buying A LOT. If rooms are staffing unknowns/lower levels. If not? It's a platitude.

Managed another few hundred words, but as I'm posting this after having finished my session for the evening, does that make it #WroteDespote instead of #WriteDespite?

I am pondering my next sabbatical. Do any of you at universities across the globe have programs/fellowships for visiting scholars/faculty from abroad? I'm especially interested in Latin America, Scotland, Wales, England, Japan, Finland, New Zealand, Australia. Thanks! [Reposted from the weekend.]

100% this in the UK as well.

"Just write" has always been bad advice, but the TV/film industry is fucked. Just writing more and more pilots or spec scripts isn't going to help anyone. Still write if you're able, but also write short stories, novels, articles or other stuff you can get published.

The really cool thing about 'Spreadie Van Halen' is that "halen" is the Welsh word for salt.

Fuck that noise. 'AI' is neither necessary nor inevitable. It brings nothing to the creative process, turns everything to shit and makes us all less capable. Its sole reason for existence is to syphon off as much cash to the tech companies as they can get.
AI will reshape publishing jobs, from editorial and production to marketing, sales and operations. The question is not whether this happens, but who shapes these changes, says Bec Evans 👇 #BookSky

At an online conference session about content creation (I know, I know), and as soon as the presentation came to genAI use, the entire chat turned to an involved and hilarious discussion of en- and em-dashes instead.

Just applied for another script development lab and whilst I don't stand a chance, it at least gave me some story ideas. I just wish there was a better way for new writers to break in that "constantly apply for schemes/submit scripts to comps".

That famous left-wing bias again
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Absolutely. On climate, you can’t deregulate your way to the future. You’re just reducing pressure to innovate in an world where the status quo is bad.

Time to #WriteDespite being utterly knackered. If I only get 100 words down, that's 100 words I don't have to write later.

'why are you taxing my unearned income?' is a question that always baffles me. A tiny proportion of estates pay inheritance tax (something that often surprises correspondents)

I really can't understand how people can't simply be grateful that they have family wealthy enough to pay inheritance tax!
It would be harder to find a less sympathetic case, given that her parents paid £20,000 for their house which is now worth £1.2m. Why is somebody moaning about the very existence of inheritance tax a news story?

I'm going insane because people constantly recommend using AI for things and it is always, ALWAYS worse than repeatedly bashing my head on a brick.

It's like you have an actual problem & all anyone recommends is "have you tried talking to my cousin? He drinks bleach & doesn't wash his pants"
