that's me, in the late 90s.

I love the cold dark clutch of grey sullen Chicago winter

"I INVOKE MY RIGHTS TO SILENCE AND COUNSEL AND WILL NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS WITHOUT MY ATTORNEY PRESENT."

If you're in the United States, that is ALL you should EVER say to law enforcement besides asking if you're being detained, and identifying yourself in a stop and ID state.

"on campus" interviews at Georgetown Law were the same way when I was there. So deeply uncomfortable and so inequitable.
If you are not in academia, you might not know this, but job interviews used to be held at conferences IN HOTEL ROOMS. Women candidates in a hotel room alone with often all-male committees. People sitting on beds! The horror stories I've heard.
I thing I sometimes thing about is that university departments were still doing job interviews in hotel rooms in the mid aughts

a big runoff last night, in New Orleans:

Calvin Duncan was exonerated after spending *28 years* in prison; he tried to get his own case records from the New Orleans city clerk—but the office dragged its feet.

So Duncan ran to become city clerk himself, and yesterday ousted the incumbent.
Calvin Duncan wins Orleans clerk of court race - Verite News New Orleans
Duncan, a political newcomer and former prisoner, defeated incumbent Darren Lombard by a wide margin in Saturday's runoff.

Repeat after me: *the purpose of a system is what it does*

If you wanted a justice system whose purpose was to ensure public safety you would need to make a different system that *does that*

The current carceral system's purpose is racialized oppression. That's what it does.
For the people asking me what I mean by "people over institutions" and "abolish the carceral state":

The American prison industrial complex is a for profit institution built on the systematic oppression and criminalization of racialized people. It should be eliminated.

Note: The pastor being thrown to the ground and arrested here while protesting outside an ICE facility here — who police single out — appears to be Rev. Michael Woolf, a Baptist pastor (he’s ordained by both American Baptist Churches USA and Alliance of Baptists).
at one point, i watched a cook county sheriff’s officer (who appears to be in charge) point out a priest in the crowd.

he and a couple officers then went into the crowd , dragged him into the street, and arrested him.

situation is still tense as crowd jostles with police to get into the street.

Unfortunately, some unethical attorneys (including one who has a social media following as a self-proclaimed advocate for immigrants) are trying to charge vulnerable families for services related to the Castañon Nava settlement that they are entitled to for free through NIJC:

We saw a stage adaptation of Wuthering Heights which really leaned into the "hurt people, hurting people" text about generational trauma that it is. The couple next to us left in a huff at intermission (clearly fans of the Oberon/Olivier story)

NO SOFTWARE, I DO NOT WANT to set up #AI companion for ANY THING. I am in too many meetings with confidentiality agreements attached and also IT'S NOT HELPFUL to have AI sending me reminders of weird-ass tasks it made up for me based on its transcription of my conversation.

The opposition to so-called “Operation Midway Blitz” is not the first time Chicagoans have stood up against our neighbors being snatched off the street by outsiders. Jeff Nichols takes a look back at how Chicago residents resisted abductions of Black Chicagoans after the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act.

A group I volunteer with is trying to buy out a neighbor selling chicken chuchitos (a Guatemalan tamale with red sauce) tomorrow. I’m thinking of placing a big order to take to Nighthawk for the whistle event. Would anyone want to chip in? You can pick them up at Nighthawk or enjoy them there.

Illinois needs a progressive income tax. It should be on the ballot every year until it passes.

Almost every other funding idea they come up with is just bullshit nibbling around the edges in ways that still predominantly tax working people instead of those with real wealth.
A corporate head tax will be paid out of a personnel/staffing budget.

Which means less money for workers in Chicago compared to other places.

Corporations don’t pay the head tax.

You do.

In the US, law enforcement isn't just legally allowed to lie to you, they're ENCOURAGED to. OTOH, your lawyer is legally prohibited from lying to you and can lose her license for it.

Which of those professions, though, do you reflexively associate more with lying?

You're not immune to copaganda.

I listened to a podcast about this idiotic method for "teaching" reading which did not teach reading at all and I was so angry.
ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.
