@lizzyisi.bsky.social
that's me, in a bar.

I love the cold dark clutch of grey sullen Chicago winter
"What do We Want, Speed or Affordability?"

We want TRAINS. We want TRAINS so we don't have to drive. We want fast, frequent trains.
As folks consider what is next after the Northern Illinois Transit Authority bill, @toddlitman.bsky.social would like to have a word: Reorient how we do transportation planning. Interestingly, he prescribes tolling new road capacity as path to affordability. www.planetizen.com/blogs/136542...
What do We Want, Speed or Affordability?
Conventional planning assumes that travellers want to save time, but evidence indicates that they usually prefer to save money. How can planning better reflect these preferences?

You know it's late on a weekend, when I'm convincing myself that if I buy a bunch of cotton, I'll make a bunch of binding and Hong Kong finish my garments from now on.

(I won't. And I'm not going to buy a bunch of cotton. But it would be fun to be that person)

People are always ready to donate to $ for food. For reasons that don't always make sense but seem v. American to me, they're less willing to donate to help make rent

But that's what families targeted by ICE in MN need right now: $ to make rent when they can't leave to work

Dating from around 1865, this hooded parka from the Aleutian Islands in southern Alaska is made from seal intestines, a naturally waterproof & windproof material. Both robust & decorative, these seal gut parkas would have been used daily to keep warm & dry in this harsh environment.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

Hey folks Calvary Food Shelf has been helping out people in Minneapolis for 30 years, and now they’re ramping up to meet the crisis, including doing home deliveries so people don’t have to risk going out.

They’re just over halfway to their current goal—let’s get them all the way, shall we?

Every day I donate to mutual aid, pep talk my organizing colleagues, go to my justice reform job, join organizing Zooms/events, leave my propaganda leaflets on buses, and still feel SO DAMN HELPLESS in the face of everything.
Everyday I write my little newsletter, pull though legal developments, send money where I can, check in with our local RRT, and attend organizing Zooms, and I still feel SO DAMN HELPLESS I’m the face of everything.

A lot of men think that they have the right to speak on behalf of women when it comes to “protecting us” from transwomen. Most women don’t have a problem allowing transwomen into our spaces. Most women don’t feel threatened by transwomen. We feel threatened by men. Stop speaking on our behalf.

Last week, we announced a plan to make child care universal. Today, applications are open for pre-K & 3-K. If your child is turning 3 or 4, apply now for the fall at: myschools.nyc

We are dealing with an institution modeled on slave catching and the great news is that we also have resistance models

This is a great book about the Underground Railroad in an urban environment, New York City:

leftist plan to increase the birthrate:

- universal health care
- free child care
- better paid family leave
- better workforce protections so they can't lay you off while you're pregnant and be like "no it was for something else i swear"

ok i did it

As birthrates tumble, some progressives say the left needs to offer ideas and solutions
The US and other countries face aging, shrinking populations. Conservatives have shaped debate over the issue. Some liberals say it's time for progressives to weigh in.

If you're in the area, please please go support this project! I saw so much hate at a similar meeting (Haven on Lincoln).

And as someone who has personally experienced homelessness in the past, I can speak to the serious lack of resources and support - it's badly needed.
There is an upcoming in-person community meeting to discuss 54 homes proposed for a portion of a vacant lot in Uptown.

The homes will be supportive housing for women at risk of homelessness. 🏘️

I'm not sure most people have any idea how often the answer to "why can't I get the municipal service I want" is "because the police union sends their heavies to budget meetings"

I heard WILD stories from a friend who was the arts rep to a midsized town's council. the cops basically had veto power!
Meanwhile the Minnesota FOP literally released a statement saying "We stand arm in arm with ICE"

Local PD don't give a single fuck about regular citizens.

and say to them:

So which Illinois Senate candidate will be the first to put out an ad making Raja's vote giving kudos to ICE for their service to America? I would think that vote would be fatal to a Senate candidate in a blue state.

BTW, I have decided to look around for a new job. BC 15 years is a long time to stay in one place & it's probably good for me to move. If you know someone looking for skills in messaging & advocating in coalitions & analyzing or administrating in complex systems, I'm your kid.
