The manufacturing of mourning crape was a highly secretive process (muse.jhu.edu/article/925222) but most crape in the US came from English textile manufacturers.

I've seen a lot of mourning clothing in collections now standardized to "crêpe" but I'm not convinced that's correct.

and crape being a weave of a more tightly twisted silk or wool and having a notably smoother (yet but still crinkled surface) much too dull for formal wear. Both are lightweight. with a nice hand, but crape is less inclined to wrinkle when worn.

There are a great variety of documents which suggest, in fact, that crape is not simply a misspelling of crêpe but a mourning fabric distinct from crêpe. With crêpe being a weave of twisted silk or wool w. a pebbled texture suitable for formal wear
