I’m sorry if you experience of whistles is white people thinking they’re the sheriff of rapid response, but that’s not how it is everywhere. Or honestly anywhere I’ve been this year.

As far as I’m aware, the whole idea of whistles came from Latino neighborhoods in LA and Chicago.

big news day for everyone who predicted that the biggest losers of 2026 would be "anyone who gets paid in united states dollars".

I live across the street from a police station. The accidental sounds and sirens that come from parked police vehicles are daily and numerous. The whistles don't make cops (of any sort) jumpy, it's the realization that normal people hate them and don't want them there.
“Don’t blow a whistle when you see ICE, it might traumatize someone and cause ICE agents to escalate their brutality” is some insane mental gymnastics and victim blaming.

Border security is a pain in the ass. Waiting three hours at ORD to go home after vacation is the worst part about international travel. The problem is the morons in the States who feel the need to dictate who should and shouldn't be in the States.
"we all want border security" is a thing Democrats say a lot but gotta be real with you, I do not give a fuck if foreign people come here if they're not bothering anyone

The idea that elected Democrats & their cohorts in the media will eventually help regular people against the Republican Party once said regular people express a certain level of kindness & appreciation to elected Democrats is a great strategy if the goal is avoiding any meaningful action whatsoever.
Frey has been asked about this way more than Trump has been asked why he has invaded an American city based on false pretenses, where rogue secret police are kidnapping and killing people.
KARL: In the hours after the shooting of Renee Good, you went on national TV and said to ICE, 'get the F out of Minneapolis.' Do you regret that language? That doesn't sound like turning the temperature down

JACOB FREY: I don't regret it at all. If I seemed like I was angry and frustrated, I was.

The people of Minneapolis turned out. We assembled all 5,000 whistle kits! Nearly all our whistles went right back out the door with event attendees.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

I don’t think people quite understand that the occupation by ICE in the Twin Cities has more or less erased non-white people from public life. They cannot safely exist in any space accessible to the public and moving between private places leaves folks vulnerable to kidnapping by armed masked goons.

When you realize that fascism is the brutalism of colonial military occupation returning to the metropole, targeted against minorities and the left, you understand that the people hollering "Abolish ICE/DHS" for two decades weren't simply loony tankies owning quislings in the replies.
Nick Miroff: After 9/11, George W. Bush created the Department of Homeland Security to prevent future terror strikes. Now DHS shifted from defending the country against foreign terrorists to deploying agents on American streets for the purpose of terrorizing American citizens.
‘Maybe DHS Was a Bad Idea’
Two decades after its founding, the department has become what its critics feared.

is the catch "people will think we're too awesome if we abolish ice", or is that catch "if we do something good people will expect us to continue to do good things and that's a lot of work", or worse yet is the catch "atlantic writers will question us"?

high school nostalgia is insane. even with a car and a driver's license i could barely do anything. i was broke. i couldn't go to most shows because i wasn't 21. i was on a multi-year plotting operation to get myself out of the suburbs. i did extra-curriculars to get myself out of the house.
