We said goodbye to Bula today. Her disease progression made her frail and took away her mobility, but she remained happy and content every single day, all the way to the end. She was so incredibly important to us, and losing her feels awful. We loved her, and she loved us.

Woah, 71st Street got a road diet and protected bike lanes from Cottage Grove to Dorchester! The terrifying drag strip along the southern edge of Oak Woods Cemetery is no more. This is so awesome!

Today's fit: 43 year old filmmaker who fronted a mid-tier indie rock group for a couple album cycles in his early to mid 20s and self-consciously clings to the little bit of microcelebrity that still affords him down at the neighborhood coffee shop

New Mountain Goats album has:

- an instrumental overture
- very lush strings, horns, and woodwinds
- some phat synths
- a couple rollicking guitar solos
- bass guitar from Tommy Stinson
- backing vox from lin-manuel miranda???

It's an honest to God rock opera with a linear plot and three narrators

James Watson, like many publicly celebrated academics, was a horrible racist who bought into his own genius and consequently spent a great deal of time and energy trying to intellectualize his racism

There's a group of four men outside my house trying collectively to parallel park a UHaul truck with one of those little enclosed UHaul trailers attached to it, and it's just been 20 minutes of shouting conflicting directions at each other with no clear plan or strategy or source of authority

Just saw Ricky Willis on his bike for the first time in quite awhile. I'm glad to have run across him, since I knew he had health issues prevent him from riding a few years ago and I never found out whether he got back on the bike.

New Mountain Goats album, new Pigeon Pit album, AND Don Hertzfeldt just dropped a cool T-shirt on the same day? All these late birthday gifts for me specifically - thanks, notable artists who don't know me.

I will say what’s interesting about these buildings is that they are aping prewar industrial architecture more than residential—there actually really aren’t many multifamily buildings that look like this from the early 20th century in Chicago
Imo Chicago infill architects are getting pretty good at these historicist brick facades

A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

Bula is no longer regularly cleaning her own face as she gets closer to the end of her life, so she gets covered in wet food when she eats, but she's still very happy and very cute despite being kind of gross
