Could see every farm and every town
I could see all the people in this whole wide world

"As of Feb. 1, people up to age 64 will have to work or volunteer at least 80 hours per month to remain eligible for food assistance. The work rules also expanded to include people who are homeless, veterans and parents of teens 14 and older."
The new work rules for the federal food assistance program start Feb. 1 in Illinois, with state officials estimating that as many as 400,000 residents could be pushed out of the program.

We are going to win
Who’s next?

One demotion cannot detract from accountability.

Greg Bovino and Trump’s agents must still be held responsible for the killings and the damage they’ve done to America.

The campaign against apartments and affordable housing in Edgewater as part of the Broadway rezoning has opened a new front: Attacking a widely praised and effective property tax program that supports mixed-income and affordable housing. www.chicagotribune.com/2026/01/26/o...
Jack Markowski: Adding tax abatements on top of Broadway’s upzoning is fiscally irresponsible
Tax abatements are not intended to be a wasteful subsidy for development that is already required to include affordable units.

A bunch of nice Minnesotans doing an impromptu Tiananmen Square bit reminds me of the quote (I forget from who) about how the Confederates and Nazis thought small-d democrats were cowardly and weak and easy to destroy, and go look for them now

Not the main point of this but I do think the fairly open misogyny of the anti-anti-Trumpers on both the left and right in the early and middle periods of Trumpism is something I wish I saw more reckoning of. Was there an equivalent in anti-"Nazi hysteria"? www.liberalcurrents.com/trump-alarmi...

As we grieve for Alex Pretti and Renee Good in MN, please do not forget Victor Manuel Diaz, who died in ICE custody after being taken from here. And all others who have died in their custody.
36-year-old Nicaraguan national Victor Manuel Diaz died in ICE custody on Jan. 14 at Camp East Montana in El Paso.

The Texas Nicaraguan Community on FB reports that his mom last heard from him on Jan. 6, when he told her he was planning to go to Minneapolis to start work in a restaurant. 1/3

Marimar Martinez was the first US citizen shot by ICE.

They claimed she was a terrorist. Said she was brandishing a weapon.

They lied. Video footage exonerated her and showed the ICE agent shot her five times.

He bragged to other agents “five shots, 7 holes”.

People are definitely setting up a barricade of trash cans and this couch, in the middle of the street where ICE is.

"That's my couch," said a woman standing nearby. "It's been on my porch for four years because it won't fit up the stairs. My neighbor will be pleased it's gone now."

This is a white supremacist paramilitary operation. Their goal—their stated goal!—is to force America to submit to the President's racist domineering vision for the country.

The sooner everybody starts confronting it on the terms that they themselves have stated, the better.

What's the story with why old Yemeni cities seem to have a totally sui generis urban form, unlike anything else in Asia Minor/the Mediterranean/the Indian Ocean trading networks (afaik)?

The point Eric Erins makes—that a bad floorplan can turn people into friction and irritation—strikes me as a microcosm of the insight that by twinning people to cars and/or traffic, suburbia turns people into an annoyance.
