The rate of growth slowed down considerably last year.

For rail, the O'Hare branch was the only line making big YoY gains.

Crazy that if the rest of the city's population had just stayed at 2000 figures while downtown grew like this we'd be flirting with 3,000,000 Chicagoans again right now.

What a great visualization--while ridership is still far below 2019, it's notable that, especially ex-winter, 2025 saw meaningful growth over 2024
Marathon week 2025 was once again the busiest week for CTA rail.

St. Pats (3/15: 569,090) was the highest individual day.

2024 ACS updates for Chicago Population.
Pulled zip codes so there is some fuzzyness around the edges here.

Downtown (including West Loop) population is up ~100,000 since 2000. Total change from 2023 to 2024 is a slight gain.

People are reading this way wrong. Schumer detached DHS from the other five bills in return for a two week CR on the DHS bill. Now Democrats can make demands on DHS spending without having to shut down agencies covered in the other five bills. They have way more leverage to get real concessions.
People just going out here saying the literal opposite of what happened. Thune caved! Thune did! This is a cave by Thune and Senate Republicans, any possible way you cut it.

"As of Feb. 1, people up to age 64 will have to work or volunteer at least 80 hours per month to remain eligible for food assistance. The work rules also expanded to include people who are homeless, veterans and parents of teens 14 and older."
The new work rules for the federal food assistance program start Feb. 1 in Illinois, with state officials estimating that as many as 400,000 residents could be pushed out of the program.

We are going to win
Who’s next?

One demotion cannot detract from accountability.

Greg Bovino and Trump’s agents must still be held responsible for the killings and the damage they’ve done to America.

The campaign against apartments and affordable housing in Edgewater as part of the Broadway rezoning has opened a new front: Attacking a widely praised and effective property tax program that supports mixed-income and affordable housing. www.chicagotribune.com/2026/01/26/o...
Jack Markowski: Adding tax abatements on top of Broadway’s upzoning is fiscally irresponsible
Tax abatements are not intended to be a wasteful subsidy for development that is already required to include affordable units.

A bunch of nice Minnesotans doing an impromptu Tiananmen Square bit reminds me of the quote (I forget from who) about how the Confederates and Nazis thought small-d democrats were cowardly and weak and easy to destroy, and go look for them now

Not the main point of this but I do think the fairly open misogyny of the anti-anti-Trumpers on both the left and right in the early and middle periods of Trumpism is something I wish I saw more reckoning of. Was there an equivalent in anti-"Nazi hysteria"? www.liberalcurrents.com/trump-alarmi...

The Texas Nicaraguan Community on FB reports that his mom last heard from him on Jan. 6, when he told her he was planning to go to Minneapolis to start work in a restaurant. 1/3

Marimar Martinez was the first US citizen shot by ICE.

They claimed she was a terrorist. Said she was brandishing a weapon.

They lied. Video footage exonerated her and showed the ICE agent shot her five times.

He bragged to other agents “five shots, 7 holes”.
