Hello, new followers! 👋

I post about a blend of climate, tech, urbanism, and biking. To start y'all off, here's a blog post I made in Sept. 2024 about owning a cargo e-bike, and how it can do 90% of what a car can, but for 10% of the cost: viktorkoves.com/2024/09/21/y...
Your First EV Could Be A Cargo E-Bike | Viktor Köves
EVs are here, but I want to show you that your first EV could just be a cargo e-bike that can replace most car trips, and save you a boat-load of money!

The United Center is one of many big buildings that hasn't been reporting their energy use and emissions, and the city hasn't given them any of the fines written in the law!

Let's make sure that's fixed, and get more buildings reporting their energy use 💪🏻
Chicago's largest buildings are breaking emissions laws, costing the city nearly $35 million in uncollected fines! Buildings over 50,000 sqft are required to report their emissions, but thousands haven't, and have faced none of the penalties.

Nothing like a bike ride in the fresh snow, even if your bike gets filthy 😆

Whenever I'm angry or upset, I always feel better after taking a nice bike ride. As a friend of mine put it, you can't stay mad - you're out in the world, out in the elements, and have to keep moving!
“Chicago is where I was born and raised. And honestly, biking just makes me feel at peace. I'm usually not the most calm person - when I'm biking though, my mind is centered. I can pay attention to my surroundings. It's kind of like a meditation for me.” 🧵

Thanks to the Illinois’ massive investment in transit, Chicago has a bright transit future, with the dawn coming next year:
—50% increase in every-10-min bus routes to 30 citywide
—8-minute midday headways on rail lines
—24-hour Orange Line service (Red & Blue already have it)

When you’re riding public transit you realize that what’s good for everybody is also good for you. If the bus runs faster, if the train is cleaner, if the AC works, we all benefit

when you’re driving a car, every other car on the road is your personal enemy
The Times parsed the vote using similar categories and again found that the single most determinative factor economic-like factor in the election was "commute by transit" vs "commute by car." It edged out renters vs. homeowners. There's still outstanding data but I expect these trends will hold.

“You're not alone in wanting a better world, one in which cars are relegated to their proper use. Cars are tools that can be useful at certain times and places. They’re not gods. They’re not the foundation of our society. They should serve us. We should not serve them. There can be life after cars.”

I loved this interview not just because it was talking with a dad about the importance of bike infrastructure for families, but also because it was shot on a warm October day, and you can see everyone milling around behind him, just enjoying our beautiful city.
Biking with his daughter gives this dad a ton of joy, but it can also reveal the gaps in a city's bike infrastructure, and he told us more about that in his full interview!

If you can, donate food or (ideally) money to your local food pantry or the Chicago Food Depository. Pantries can buy food (including fresh food!) at huge discounts, making sure folks don't just get canned and dry goods, but can eat in dignity.
