Hello, new followers! 👋

I post about a blend of climate, tech, urbanism, and biking. To start y'all off, here's a blog post I made in Sept. 2024 about owning a cargo e-bike, and how it can do 90% of what a car can, but for 10% of the cost: viktorkoves.com/2024/09/21/y...
Your First EV Could Be A Cargo E-Bike | Viktor Köves
EVs are here, but I want to show you that your first EV could just be a cargo e-bike that can replace most car trips, and save you a boat-load of money!

A parent at my kids’ school was abducted a few hours ago.

Please help us help the family with legal expenses and care for their elementary school son (who doesn’t even know his dad was taken yet 💔):

Put another way: Ald. La Spata moves forward proposal to help citizens enforce existing laws and bring consequences to scofflaws who hinder all forms of mobility, whether it's folks using a crosswalk, people biking, or slowing down cars and buses
Ald. Daniel La Spata (1st) convinced the City Council's Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety he chairs to let Chicagoans use their cell phones to essentially become "snitches" and provide the city with recorded evidence of bus, bike lane and crosswalk parking violations.
Despite business community concerns, Council committee backs parking enforcement by citizens

I played the L board game, and it's unfortunately targeted exactly at me and is a banger, it even roasts the Brown line speed 💀

If you put bike lanes everywhere in the city, it stops being viewed as a symbol of gentrification. They stop becoming an "amenity" that brings better personal safety and higher quality of life. If one person said a new road with speed bumps would bring gentrification, they'd sound ridiculous.

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

This whole thread is so good as a breakdown of this incredible halftime show. Music is political, and Bad Bunny leverages it to full effect
Next is "El Apagón" (the blackout) which I could write a whole thread about on its own

The song and its video (a mini documentary) are about a lot of things, including the problems with Puerto Rico's electrical grid, which have gotten worse since Hurricane Maria

This kind of smart, walkable, mixed-use urbanism is illegal to build in most American cities.

"Cities are scary"

Counter-point: I left a Chicago super bowl party and saw revelers walking home with pots, and got offered a free beer waiting for my train home

Yesterday was a good night for my studded tires to arrive from Perennial Cycle in Minneapolis.

The real question - is February too late to bother putting them on?

Chicago stays winning
With the most robust rail network in the American Midwest, Chicago has the 2nd largest number of car-free households of any metro area (behind only NYC)

Most of those households live around the L, especially the Red Line and western parts of the Blue & Green Lines

WE ARE SO BACK
With more than 3B riders, the NYC MTA remains by far America's busiest transit agency

But there was a big shakeup in the ranking of other major transit agencies in 2025, with Chicago's CTA reclaiming the #2 spot from LA Metro and DC's WMATA then bumping LA Metro to 4th place

Ian is a super kind and trustworthy person. If you would like to help some families in Minnesota directly, you could make a donation through them.
Working in coordination with standwithminnesota.com and with your help, we have now paid rent for four Minneapolis families affected by ICE. Let’s keep it going!

Can we make it happen for a fifth family? Their total need is $2300.

Challenge accepted!

I am raising rent funds for a Minneapolis family with four kids. They owe a month of back rent for $3975 total.

Can we make this happen for them today? I believe in us & will post receipts!

Please help and share!
Thank you 💛
tomorrow i would really like to challenge a few folks with larger followings than me to adopt a rent and raise it in one day.

my little group chat and my followers have paid like 70 families rents in the past four days. i believe that some of y’all could help us keep one family housed.
today's report:

our "adopt a rent" venmo campaign paid 43 families rents who were at risk of evictions, including several moms of 4+ children

this is the way to get rent paid fast. like. 1000x better than any other way.

I just generally think the antidote to dooming and feelings of helplessness is getting involved in any way. It can be as a poll worker, doing ICE watch, running for local office, helping with mutual aid, whatever.

You can get so much accomplished in your town or city if you just get involved.
anyway i know how many of you hate that i’m so vocal about this and think it makes me a naive shitlib or whatever. but again, i think the best thing you could do for yourself here is to get involved in election administration where you live.

Com visit! In the summer. It is gorgeous here in summer time and you’d all be welcome.
Axios had a story today about how hard Minnesota’s economy is being hit and how slow the recovery could be. So, I’m going to take this opportunity to say that if you want to support the Twin Cities, you should plan a visit for this summer, spend some money here, & see how amazing it is for yourself.
