Hello, new followers! 👋

I post about a blend of climate, tech, urbanism, and biking. To start y'all off, here's a blog post I made in Sept. 2024 about owning a cargo e-bike, and how it can do 90% of what a car can, but for 10% of the cost: viktorkoves.com/2024/09/21/y...
Your First EV Could Be A Cargo E-Bike | Viktor Köves
EVs are here, but I want to show you that your first EV could just be a cargo e-bike that can replace most car trips, and save you a boat-load of money!

Transit's main competition is cars. If you raise fares from $2.50 to $3, you're still way more affordable than driving. But if you cut the bus from every 15 to every 20, you're screwed because cars have infinity frequency and 24 hr service span.
I hate that we’re having to think in these terms, but the evidence seems to be bearing out that steep fare hikes are less damaging to ridership than service cuts.
2025 was brutal for US transit. Agencies faced budget deficits, flat ridership, and open hostility from the White House.

I wrote a series of stories outlining ways to help transit endure.

Lesson #1: Whatever you do, don’t cut service. Riders will leave – permanently.

Here are a few others 🧵

I spend $30ish a year to support one of the best urbanism/safe streets creators around, which seems like an absolute bargain. Plus, I got a cool sticker when I became a supporter! What are you waiting for?

I'm not proud of some of my misses, but a B is a passing grade 😆

More public markets and pedestrian plazas all year round, not just for the last 45 days of the year.

Spent Christmas Eve evening with some of my #BikeChi family, packing up 150 cheesecakes and riding around the city, passing them out to neighbors on the street and community fridges for some last minute Christmas cheer 🎅🏽🫶🏽🚲🍰

On my last two buses passengers have wished the whole bus “Merry Christmas”.

Drivers could never be this adorable.

I'm not loving that we have two Chicago Christmases in a row that are in the 40s, but at least it makes the "you can't bike after September" people look real foolish

Aldermanic perogative means that despite rising rents, areas with transit and jobs get to oppose apartment and condo buildings for any arbitrary reason. It's not like this in other places!
Chicagoans - please take a moment to tell the OIG to investigate aldermanic prerogative in housing development

Chicago's got that big dock energy
Divvy’s Kingsbury/Kinzie station was just electrified. It’s the 2nd busiest in the system and we doubled capacity. Half the docks are now electrified, charging e-bikes and e-scooters right in the dock. The PBLs on Kinzie make trips to this station safe and possible.

A YouTuber visualized a redesign of Elston & Ashland, and this looks like a dream - protected bike lane, shorter cross walks, and clearer no more chaotic intersection

Have some extra time over the holidays? Definitely watch the new PBS Chicago Works special with Geoffrey Baer

In just fifteen minutes they've already hit the bridge houses, the Cubs scoreboard, and trimmed the Wrigley ivy!

I've been pleasantly surprised that most of the comments on our latest video have been positive, but this one... is a little disappointing

In good news, it contains the secret to never getting in a bike accident - just follow the rules!
