I loved making mix tapes and I never got into burning CDs because a mix tape required you to listen to the whole song before cueing up the next. I'd have an idea but the experience felt more organic
everyone who spent the 90s laboriously and lovingly making mixtapes just dissolved into ancient dust
My favorite piece of content today.

It is very easy to switch and there are alternatives that cost the same, pay artists better, and provide tools to migrate your playlists.

Honestly not sure why more people don't switch but if you want help and suggestions for how, let me know
Spotify is helping ICE recruit more agents to infringe our rights and terrorize our communities. Stop paying for or using the app until Spotify stops running ads for ICE: indivisible.org/cancel-spotify?source=bluesky

PLEASE, retail workers

from a religious minority living under Christian hegemony year-round

(factcheck: true)

the public space stuff this time of year is a lot

(though I'd 100% take public Christmas but w/national abortion access if playing forced choice, ofc)

PLEASE DO THIS

it is a kindness
When I worked at a bookstore, I quickly learned that people cannot tell the difference between Xmas music and any Baroque or Elizabethan music album that doesn't get too organ-ish. I used this to my advantage.

One customer caught on... AND THANKED ME
If we had to hear “Baby Shark” everywhere we went for two whole months out of the year we’d throw a fit, right?

And rightfully so.

So tell me, why do we put up with it when the song is “Frosty the Snowman”?

I took an edible at 3pm before leaving on this bus ride and it has completely failed to hit 😞

Beautifully written & reasoned 3 min read. “To my students and to anyone who might listen, I say: Don’t surrender to AI your ability to read, write and think when others once risked their lives and died for the freedom to do so.”

I'm writing a book!

I'm thrilled to announce that my first book, "Slaves to the Grave: The Wicked Rise and Deadly Fall of Rigor Mortis, Pantera, and Southern Metal," will be published by Da Capo Press in the fall of 2027. I couldn't be more excited.

Now for the easy part—writing the damn thing!

I don't understand how so many people don't find sycophancy deeply off-putting.
In a world in which people with too much power and influence desperately need to be told and to understand when they are wrong, we are suddenly all inescapably drowning in sycophancy machines.

I am looking for a good book on the Etruscans. Ideally more general audience than scholarly. I read some academic history writing but for what I want endless "more/less significant than previously thought" arguments with the previous generation of historians are not it.

Recommendations appreciated!

With careful planning I will be leaving for 15 days with a fridge empty except condiments, having eaten mostly homecooked meals all week.

But I have yet to settle my trousers packing dilemma: comfortable jeans that look dirty quicker, or uncomfortable jeans that always look and feel fresh?

I've downloaded this (thicc 1 hour 40 min ep) for my 7 hour bus ride tomorrow though it's hard to stop myself from listening to it right away.
Somehow I spoke to more anthropologists for my silly little podcast than Yuval Harari did for his bestselling book
Really enjoyed chatting with @michaelhobbes.bsky.social for this episode! In addition to being a delight to talk to, Michael was _extremely_ committed to getting the facts right & engaged very earnestly with our feedback. A scientist's dream.

When "I won't vote for somebody who doesn't support trans people" is considered a hostage taking purity test

but "I won't vote for somebody who DOES support trans people" is NOT considered a hostage-taking purity test

then we aren't against hostage taking, we're just choosing our preferred hostage

My top 5 book genres:

* History meets myth and it's violent and slightly magical 🧙‍♂️
* People dying horribly in cold places 🧊
* Soothing space bureaucracy 🖇️
* Enemies must work together (and then hopefully get homoerotic about it) 👯‍♂️
* The house, you see, she is creepy 👻

I thought it was extremely clear that the creature's forgiveness was for the sake of his own peace and healing, not the Dr's
I saw someone get mad at GDT's Frankenstein for "promoting forgiving abusers" and I don't know how to explain to another adult that horror movies are not supposed to consist entirely of moral instruction

Friday I depart for a 2-week trip to Korea and Japan! I'm very much looking forward to it, but right now I'm obsessed with my packing. I think I've got my knitting projects figured out. Need to do a packing dry run of the clothes I've chosen to see how they fit.
