One of the best Christmas movies ever made, 1934's THE THIN MAN takes a flawed novel, turns it into a flawed movie, and creates a wholesome romance that requires at least three dead bodies.
Silver Screen Sleuths: The Thin Man (1934)
Every year, those of us in the literary sphere (I will generously include myself) are titillated with the list of works suddenly heading into the public domain. A lot of "copywrong" people become suddenly thrilled that they can make Winnie The Pooh slasher films or pornography starring Bertie Wooster or whatever without the threat of lawsuit or royalty payments; the rest of us are just intrigued by the passage of time.

With just a few hours left in 2025, I seem to be within fewer than 100 followers of cracking the 10K mark. I do love round numbers, so if anyone out there who isn’t already following me here on Bluesky would be willing to sign on for this profanity-riddled feed of mine before midnight Eastern Time…🙂

I started writing this speculative fiction trilogy in the 2010s. It was the third full-length work of fiction I'd written. As it transpired, fewer people were interested in reading about imaginary bands than I'd hoped. It's still available on that there internet, though - and not only from Amazon.

“left alone to listen to shit” was such a core formative experience for me that i honestly can’t get a solid idea of the person i would have turned into without it?

i needed a measure of boredom and isolation and…non-conversational voices* to go on little stationary expeditions exploring!
My twelve-year-old daughter's Christmas haul included a cassette Walkman and a Discman, and music to play on both.

Yes, part of it is STRANGER THINGS. But part of it is the seemingly inevitable swing towards throwback tech, coupled with the current longing to be LEFT ALONE TO LISTEN TO SHIT
I used to think that smartphones and streaming were a mistake because giving people the illusion of access to everything all of the time would break us irreparably, but this & returns to iPods, DVDs, records, etc prove that people just want to be people, not 24/7 consumers and marketing targets.

The same developers as Tactical Breach Wizards, and just as much defenestration, this was one of tho games back in the day that made me really adore the indie game scene. So you can blame things like this and FTL for my love of Indies, and I still count Gunpoint as one of the best.

We all read some bad books this year. I didn’t finish some and had to write negative reviews here and there. However, what I really want to hear about is the stuff that blew your mind, that made you think, that stayed with you. Tell me about the cool books you loved this year.

Fantasy story idea: the sword of the Gods is said to make the Chosen One utterly undefeatable in battle, and so far it's been true. The Champion has been wielding it for decades, vanquishing foes left and right.

He's not the Chosen One, he's just a really good swordsman who bought into his own hype

I'm v impressed by the series of articles @thepress.co.nz is running this week on nitrate pollution. Congrats to Maxine Jacobs, the author. Here's today's article, the 3rd in a series of 6. If you don't subscribe, consider buying. Or view through the library www.thepress.co.nz/environment/...

Melisa Rusbatch drinks bottled water after feeling ill from nitrate-laden water. Others have installed costly filtration systems to avoid the health risks. But not everyone can afford such measures.
