A reminder that democracies deal with criminality from elected officials by giving them trials and due process before imposing legal penalties commensurate with the crime.

A legislature can pass laws to specifically fund independent prosecutors to investigate and charge corrupt politicians.

the reason you get a bunch of these “people thinking about leaving” pieces but then nobody much leaves isn’t sinister imo.

it’s that it’s very very easy to think about moving, but actually moving is an enormous pain in the ass
Billionaires are considering cutting or reducing their ties to California by the end of the year because of a proposed ballot measure that could tax the state’s wealthiest residents.
A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving
It’s uncertain whether the proposal will reach the statewide ballot in November, but some billionaires like Peter Thiel and Larry Page may be unwilling to take the risk.

Sounds like Trump just blow up some empty fields in Nigeria.
So the question is has our military become incompetent under Hegseth OR is this some malicious compliance by military officials to let the mad king Trump push the "bomb things button" without hurting anyone.

It's incredible how much of this stuff is just out in the open, but because Trump said "Russiagate hoax!" 5000 times, the media was brainwashed into treating it like a nothing story instead of one of a ten alarm scandal
Tenet Media founder Lauren Chen, who secretly took money from two people with ties to Russian state media to involve conservative influencers in an unwitting propaganda scheme, is back in the US after being deported to Canada under President Biden. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Latest Epstein files name Trump multiple times
In the more than 10,000 files released Tuesday, Jeffrey Epstein’s brother, Mark Epstein, said the sex trafficker was killed because he was going to name co-conspirators.

I literally cant understand why it takes Multnomah county until nearly 2026 to release this data about 2024. It should be ready by like Feb 1st. Impossible to make informed policy making with such out of date information. www.opb.org/article/2025...
At least 372 people died while experiencing homelessness in Multnomah County last year
It’s the first annual decrease in recorded deaths since the county began tracking in 2011.

A president with a job approval rating of only 36% joking about how they could leave the presidency is a choice.
Trump: "Tell me what you think of my 'Master of Ceremony' abilities. If really good, would you like me to leave the Presidency in order to make “hosting” a full time job?"

Here is another one
Trump is now calling the New York Times a national security threat and says they “must be dealt with and stopped.”

The White House is now citing "national security" for everything it does. Seriously, check out these headlines. It's just the last few weeks.

If you know authoritarian history, then you know how menacing this is.

This is nice but probably ends up acting less like a compromise and more like trying to build only half a bridge.
County management of just mental health is just an inherent policy mistake for stupid historical reasons. Other states wisely run it directly at the state level.
Oregon’s state government and its main association of counties have settled on a plan that would empower the Oregon Health Authority to more closely monitor and shape mental health and addiction services at the local level.

Based on Trump's increasingly unhinged behavior and the weakening economy in 11 months things will likely be even worse for Republicans than these catastrophic numbers.

there is one and only one political strategy, and that is: “hang trump like an anchor around the neck of every single elected republican and the party itself.” no ‘friends across the aisle.’ no ‘the fever will break.’ anyone not on board with that has to go. no exceptions

The thing where Trump names everything after himself isn’t a funny little quirk but an incredibly reliable indicator that a leader is in fact a dictator. It doesn’t happen in any democratic society, no sane leader does it
