I was thinking about Allen Smith recently, @jbd1.bsky.social, how despite years of being a curious person I finally understood systems of info organization thanks to his reference class. It was such a pro-human exercise, learning how much work individuals have done to collect info for other humans.

Libraries adopting “ai search tools“ which encourage patrons to ask an LLM to “explore information” instead of identifying sources and facilitating access seems so stupid I have trouble knowing how to respond. I wonder how many librarians (or books) will be left at places like that in 5 years.

The Plymouth County jail in #Massachusetts has 526 beds for ICE detainees, but Maura Healey hasn't tried to stop it with legislation and has dismissed it as a “county issue,” so it's interesting that she's weighing in on happenings in other states.
Shooting people in the street. Ripping parents from children. Americans stopped, detained and killed.

Now, ICE wants to build a new 400-bed facility in New Hampshire?

Governor Ayotte should be doing everything in her power to block this. Enough is enough.
Newly released documents detail ICE plans for warehouse facility in Merrimack, N.H. - The Boston Globe
The acting ICE director said federal officials previously told Governor Ayotte about the economic impacts of controversial facility. Ayotte said the director’s comments were “simply not true.”

AI detectors are AI for people who hate AI, but still want to base their decisions on what it says (as a treat)
Just because I keep seeing those "I checked this piece and it's written by AI" - this is an old article of mine, before AI was available. So could we not?

If you were in American elementary schools from the mid 1970s on, you likely used the CIA World Factbook for classwork. It was in the school library, if you had one. Like all US govdocs, it’s in the public domain; one of the unsung glories of the US has been its contribution to the public domain.
It was also the property of the American public, and they trashed it.
Killing the CIA World Factbook might seem like small potatoes, but it was a touchstone of curated facts in a sea of disinformation.

The mastodon feature that bluesky vitally needs is muting reskeets per-user, and mutes with time limits.

ie. Mute reskeets by user A who posts great but smashes the reskeet button all day, and keep them on for user B who reskeets rarely but good. Or mute for 7 days until an event is over.

Snowy walk: 1 heron, 2 culvert mallards (road salt washes in from storm drains & thaws a puddle of the brook), a feeder mallard (eating seeds a messy house sparrow drops) dark-eyed juncos, a treeful of mourning doves. On my porch: juncos, carolina wren, american robin, & starlings.

Okay I will stop after this one because I think an entire Norton Anthology or three live rent free in my head. But I cannot tell a lie; I sometimes randomly mutter these lines to myself:

When I was a kid we went to First Night on NYE and someone recited this in full Poe cosplay in a freezing basement and since then it gets stuck in my head like the world’s weirdest earworm.
