In the two years since the state started charging a 4% surtax on incomes over $1 million, the effort has created a $5.7 billion windfall, with the surplus being used to fund bridge repairs, bolster literacy programs and address the transportation system’s budget deficit. Massachusetts Millionaires Tax Revenue. Surtax collections have far exceeded what officials budgeted for. The state's fiscal year covers the 12 months ending on June 30 of the stated year. In FY23, $0, $242 million collected. FY24, $1 billion budgeted, $2.5 billion collected. FY25, $1.3 billion budgeted, $3 billion collected. Source: Massachusetts Department of Revenue. The extra cash has helped Governor Maura Healey ease the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s budget gap at a time when other states are slashing train and bus service. Healey’s now seeking to use $200 million of the money to address President Donald Trump’s cuts to research funding at Massachusetts institutions, one of the biggest threats to the state’s economy. The law that created the tax requires the funds to go toward education and transportation initiatives.

mastodon's timed mutes are one of the best features of that platform that I want over here. I use them all the time -- they make Discourse so much more ignorable.

I think bumbles should be safe.
A common eastern bumble bee on a new england aster. The tracery of black in the bee’s wings stands out sharply, and it’s practically humping the flower. The pinkish purple aster petals, late in their bloom, curl like someone’s taken scissor blades to a present ribbon to give it a nice curl. The bee is very fuzzy and I want to pet it.

Anyway I am managing the existential terror of living in the moment by posting out of my photo roll so here’s a picture of ponyhenge that the iphone image classifier thinks is “birds”.

heron auditioning to be a mysterious plague doctor in the next big fantasy RPG or possibly a magical guide in a ghibli film.
On a high branch by the river in the winter, a great blue heron looms on one leg. From the back it’s like a hunched figure in a grey cloak, but it’s head is turned to one side so you see its face and beak clearly. Birds look sideways so it’s probably watching the photographer but it looks like it’s gazing mysteriously off into the mist.

my photo roll is roughly 60% cats, 20% bad pics of birds, 20% moss & lichen, and 10% bugs I haven’t yet posted on iNat. So when I searched for “birds” and it found only a few I wasn’t sure if I should blame my photography skulls or the iphone image classifier.

But maybe I should blame evolution.
A wild turkey standing on one foot on the edge of an urban driveway, looking like baba yaga’s house turned into a pinecone and then someone nailed on the weirdest dinosaur figurehead, and painted just the figurehead red.

He couldn't type, he had an undergrad type for him. In 2010 absolutely lost his shit at Eric Johansson for suggesting that hybrid free and proprietary systems (eg. running assistive tech on Linux, for people who don't have undergrads at hand) were philosophically acceptable.
For several years I had bad hand pain and mostly could not type. I did not even consider using a nonfree dictation program, because nonfree software would take away my freedom and I was not prepared to dedicate my efforts to replacing it. "Can't use" is such a strong statement that I wonder if it is another exaggeration, Even if you have no hands, there are other ways to input besides dictation. Our goal is to eliminate proprietary software. Towards that end, we have to teach people it is bad. We cannot do that and simultaneously suggest a "solution" that includes NaturallySpeaking -- that is a non-starter here. Billions of people today are too poor to do these things. Poverty is deprivation, but it isn't slavery. Your concept of "economic freedom" is a misguided concept that attempts to disguise poverty as slavery. That is a mistake.

Most of this is just normal good advice for employees.
Be patient with her, especially a beginner. Supervise closely, inspect work stages frequently in her early employment. Let her know when she is doing a good job. Make her safety and health conscious. Look for potential forewoman material.

I'm probably never going to post or repost. I recognize this makes me look like a fake account. There's not much I can do about that.

If it helps, here's my two favorite pictures my wildlife camera ever took:
A ridiculously blurry, bug-eyed closeup of -- I think? -- a european starling, from when the wildlife cam was in a second story window aimed at a crabapple tree and the starling photobombed the tree. A night-vision shot of a possum from behind. Its ankles are delicately crossed at the ankles and it's very definitely assigned male at birth.
