Low-intensity warfare is uncanny. We continue to go to work, bring kids to school, shop for groceries, etc. But our everyday routines are punctuated by random episodes of spectacular violence; war as a way of life.
Scenes From the Occupation
As the feds cracked down on immigration in Chicago this fall, filmmaker Carlos Javier Ortiz’s camera was rolling. These stills and footage show a city in crisis — and a city defiant.

Tyler and I are out here at the rally where the crowd has about doubled since this first post. Easily 400+ people.

Group is chanting “no hate, no fear, everyone is welcome here.”
Here at Northcenter Town Square where 100-200 community members including families and young children are rallying after a teacher was taken by federal law enforcement from a local daycare this morning.

Mass protests are an implicit threat of potential violence even when they are entirely peaceful.

They serve to keep state power in check by demonstrating “there are more of us than you so fix your shit.”

The state knows this, which is why its agents often respond to them with unprovoked violence.

A valuable list. Three concentrations: The Civil War, the Civil Rights Era, and anti-labor throughout. US Gov't has taken this step 14 times w/ main purpose of opposing white supremacists, six times w/ central purpose of supporting them. Trump, of course, joins this latter "tradition."
To back up: Presidents have deployed troops for purposes of quelling unrest or executing the law only 30 times in U.S. history. The Brennan Center has published a guide compiling and annotating those instances. 3/19 www.brennancenter.org/our-work/res...

Gov. Gavin Newsom and the White House confirm that the federal government is preparing to federalize the National Guard and deploy up to 2,000 military troops in Los Angeles.

Let’s be very clear—this is not crowd control. This would be a federal occupation of a U.S. city.

Hear me out.

In a better world we wouldn’t have to watch fascist billionaires get into pissy fights or be pressured to side between a Nazi oligarch and a pedophile president.

In a better world these people would be in prison or kept from seizing power and hoarding resources.

I was talking about this with my students yesterday—throughout Western Europe, Nazism is treated in public spaces and memorials as a nightmare, as horror that must never be repeated.

If slavery and Jim Crow received the same commemoration in the US, we'd be a very different country.
Buffoonery aside, I think a lot of Americans can't process that multiple generations of Germans renounce and revile past actions rather than treat them as an aspect of of their culture that must be maintained.

There’s another faith-led Moral Mondays protest in front of SCOTUS right now — this one noticeably larger than in weeks past.

The march from a church to SCOTUS, where people will decry cuts to healthcare programs in the GOP budget, is led by pastors and wheelchair users (and some who are both).

the entire series of related stories in the NYT ooze with unnamed sources inside the administration describing what they want to have happen

any “deals” with universities should be treated with the same skepticism as the supposed “deals” with other countries on tariffs

they’re losing and know it
I’m not saying this story is false but I am saying it is totally in the interest of the Trump White House to have a story out there suggesting that some universities are looking to acquiesce.
No no no! These university leaders don’t get it. If you negotiate one on one you don’t buy peace; you just expose the whole sector and yourselves to more shakedowns. See law firms.

The only response is to unite in collective action and fight the Admin’s illegality. www.cnn.com/2025/05/31/p...

He enjoys domination and exercising power over the weak, so he loves the moment where he gets to say “We’re gonna hit you with 50%” and everyone gasps in shock and he gets to watch people suffer and he gets to feel strong. It’s about dopamine and if he stops pushing that button the dopamine stops
the problem with Trump is that he loves imposing tariffs more than just having tariffs, so a couple weeks after any tariff pauses he’ll always get bored want to raise them more
