To kick off posting actual content here, an early-season West Texas storm that kicked off our 2024 LIFT deployments. Storm wasn't anything to write home about in terms of impact, but sometimes those are the best to just watch and appreciate. 4/15/24

The evidence for social media (and media generally) driving the global far-right and populist upsurge is that you can go talk to virtually any person who ascribes to these politics and their brains are a stew of memes they got from Fox News and/or their crank influencers of choice
Everyone loves this story but there is so little evidence for it...
I don’t think Obama can explain why politics has simultaneously gone insane in the US, France, the UK, Argentina, India, to name a few. No… there must be something else. Something that changed everywhere, in the 2010s, something that has only grown over time… what could it be…

I don't think you non-science people realize what it takes to get a grant funded by NIH. Started experiments in Sept 2021 to generate 3 new mouse mutants to model human disease. Prelim dara shows they have relevant disease phenotypes worthy of study. Need a small grant first to characterize /1

When I've talked to deepfake victims, both public figures and everyday people, I've heard horror stories about police laughing them out the door, girls getting expelled for reporting their classmates, and lawyers advising them that suing would just make it worse. This is abuse culture in action.

On Jack Smith deposition, now released:

100% obvious why GOP refused to allow this as open testimony, aired live. It's damning.

Testimony from John Dean or Alex ("wiretaps") Butterfield in Watergate days would have 1/10th the impact if just in print.

What Smith says is far more incriminating.

Rather than engaging in discrimination, Mel Curth has been the target of a political movement that seeks to silence and/or oust LGBTQ people from academia. Ms. Curth will continue to fight back against these harmful allegations.

Today, my client, Mel Curth, submitted her appeal of the University's Institutional Equity Office finding that she engaged in arbitrary and capricious grading of a student's assignment in violation of that student's religious liberty.

So much of the issues related to transit governance is downstream from the fact that both the boards of these agencies and many of advocates in this space believe that transit is a welfare program that acts as “transportation of last resort” as opposed to a viable, affordable alternative to cars.
The equity case for infrequent buses at low fares only makes sense if you believe low income people’s time has no value or that they don’t value their time.
Every transit professional knows this, but equity

The GOP has really leaned in to singling out Somalis for very explicit racism. Ron Johnson and the rest of the party are just loathsome, un-American people.
Ron Johnson: "Understand, Somalis have just been in this country a few years. They're amateurs when it comes to fleecing the federal government."

I’ve believed that RW zealot GOP have worked to dismantle public education for this reason + reaction to desegregation since at least Reagan, amplified by Newt. Trump’s animus to education is that the educated elite shun him, make him feel small. It’s all personal, not policy or ideas, with him.

The Republican Party changed not on account of Bush, but on account of Fox: the creation of an ever-expanding media bubble that conservatives could opt to live inside, where their every fantasy was indulged as true. This bubble was created as an instrument of movement conservatism, but consumed it.
Like virtually everyone else , Will forgets that Trump in fact ran for president prior to 2016, and barely registered. In fact what happened in between that the Republican Party fundamentally changed and most of that is on account of Bush.

1. This is terrible.
2. This is such a BS claim from a university: “We are committed to teaching students how to think, not what to think.” No! We do, in fact, commit to teaching you what to think. You sign up for a psych course, you have to learn psychology. You can ignore it later if you choose.

When the Montgomery Advertiser did a lynching series in 2018, I learned of two trials in Elmore County in 1901 in which white men were convicted of killing a Black man. I went to Alabama Archives. And in a box there, I found a complete typed transcript of one of the trials. Untouched for 116 years.
I think we need a mega thread of everyone's craziest archive stories.
