To kick off posting actual content here, an early-season West Texas storm that kicked off our 2024 LIFT deployments. Storm wasn't anything to write home about in terms of impact, but sometimes those are the best to just watch and appreciate. 4/15/24

I’ve believed that RW zealot GOP have worked to dismantle public education for this reason + reaction to desegregation since at least Reagan, amplified by Newt. Trump’s animus to education is that the educated elite shun him, make him feel small. It’s all personal, not policy or ideas, with him.

The Republican Party changed not on account of Bush, but on account of Fox: the creation of an ever-expanding media bubble that conservatives could opt to live inside, where their every fantasy was indulged as true. This bubble was created as an instrument of movement conservatism, but consumed it.
Like virtually everyone else , Will forgets that Trump in fact ran for president prior to 2016, and barely registered. In fact what happened in between that the Republican Party fundamentally changed and most of that is on account of Bush.

New from me: The storied fiddler Ashley MacIsaac wanted to play a show at a Nova Scotia First Nation. It got cancelled because Google's AI search summary incorrectly called him a sex offender. Now he's worried for his safety www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/arti...

1. This is terrible.
2. This is such a BS claim from a university: “We are committed to teaching students how to think, not what to think.” No! We do, in fact, commit to teaching you what to think. You sign up for a psych course, you have to learn psychology. You can ignore it later if you choose.

When the Montgomery Advertiser did a lynching series in 2018, I learned of two trials in Elmore County in 1901 in which white men were convicted of killing a Black man. I went to Alabama Archives. And in a box there, I found a complete typed transcript of one of the trials. Untouched for 116 years.
I think we need a mega thread of everyone's craziest archive stories.

2 years ago the Colts used a top-5 pick on a QB whose scouting profile was "the greatest athlete you on the planet, throws the ball one billion mph with no accuracy" but to unlock their offense they actually needed a middle-aged man who audibly goes "humph" when he sits down in his favorite chair

/8 These culture war issues always flip the script. I think recent events demonstrate why it is, in fact, dangerous to give students a veto over professors based on disagreement with their speech.

Almost every story Weiss greenlit at the Free Press lacked sufficient context. It's kinda their entire schtick.

“In that same court document, it is revealed that Epstein took the then 14-year-old to Mar-a-Lago in 1994, where she was introduced to Donald Trump. According to the files, Epstein elbowed Trump playfully asking him, "This is a good one, right?" with Trump smiling and nodding in agreement.”
Met in Michigan: New Epstein files reveal where he met his first victim
The first known victim of Jeffrey Epstein was a 13-year-old girl in Michigan in the 1990s, according to files recently released by the Department of Justice.

CBS News postponed a "60 Minutes" segment Sunday because it lacked a Trump admin interview, per an email we obtained from correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, who said the decision by EIC Bari Weiss gave the White House a "kill switch." with @liamjscott.bsky.social

‘60 Minutes’ correspondent says CBS’s Bari Weiss abruptly pulled segment on Trump deportations
CBS News pulled a ‘60 Minutes’ segment about a prison in El Salvador one day before it was set to air because the Trump administration declined to participate.

Bari only pulled this program after the promos started airing, which means she probably got a phone call. So she's not just bad at her ostensible job of running CBS news, but she's also bad at her *actual* job of running interference for the Trump admin
CBS News EIC Bari Weiss had concerns about the CECOT piece, I’m told. The network decided to hold the segment pending, among other things, comment or an interview with White House officials next year…

yeah Trump was all things to all people, and JD is not going to convince the same low info coalition who sees Trump as some world historic business genius to sign up for KKK hoods
Trump only won because he somehow tricked enough people into believing that he doesn't actually mean what he explicitly says. I don't think JD can make that work, lol.

This is not a tricky question, after the first hit I would pass away
been thinking about that “if you had 10 carries behind an NFL line, could you get a first down” hypothetical

and the trickier question is this: assuming you don’t slide, could you make it through all ten carries without fumbling

matt & co’s theory of how public opinion on immigration would respond to new information was simply empirically wrong.
at this point the only reasonable conclusion is they refuse to update their priors w/ new data because the data is inconvenient for them

This is not just "NCAR boosterism," folks. There are multiple empirical measures by which this is correct--and also, if you took a random sampling of atmospheric & Earth scientists from around the world, I'd bet that a substantial majority of them would agree. NCAR is truly irreplaceable.
Bucalacchi stresses NCAR's reach is unique globally: "if you look at the totality of activities from weather, water, climate, space, weather, atmosphere, chemistry- no one single institution covers that breadth and depth of across observation, high performance computing and modelling and tradition."
