The first person recorded wishing someone "Merry Christmas" was Bishop John Fisher, in a letter to Thomas Cromwell #OnThisDay, 22nd December 1534.

"And this our Lord God send you a mery Christmas, and a comfortable, to your heart’s desire."

With solitude its fervent wish
When hungry, their demeanour's even ruder
They're known to bite their prey in two
They'd even have a go at you
The silver and the salty

In fairness if you showed that picture to people 300 years ago they wouldn’t have known who those guys were
Next time your mate is deep in a reverie about the immutable, exceptional nature of English identity, you might want to show them this picture and remind them that 300 years ago this would have been enough to send the entire kingdom into a revolutionary, effigy burning, chapel torching frenzy

twitter being bought and turned into a propaganda machine for fascism, which is directly pumped into every journalist in the world's brain, is one of the worst things to happen in the last few years. we might not survive it.
I'm guessing the BBC 'scandal' has been big on X this week as this was the first I had heard of it...

Keeping Mandelson would mean Number 10 thinks not following a recommendation to take specialist tax advice is a resigning matter, but believing the world’s most notorious paedophile over his victims and lying about your post-conviction contact with him isn’t.

That’s…not a sustainable position.

And this was done as part of any coherent geopolitical strategy, legal or illegal: it was done to create a fan-service snuff film for social media.
This is not a thorny issue. This is not fraught. It is extrajudicial killing. It is the killing of civilians under any standard of law. He killed them on the basis of his-say so that they are drug smugglers, mere criminals. It was premeditated. And he's saying he's going to do it again and again.
I know people are overwhelmed by too much news from every angle, and maybe people are distracted by the "terrorist" language, or just plain exhausted.

But this is the President of the United States saying he is going to go around killing people because he thinks they're criminals. And already did.

I was just reading a book which covered the US reaction to the Lusitania sinking, and while of course it was always hypocritical and self-serving at times there was a lot of genuine horror being expressed at this German ‘frightfulness’. And then this
Trump killed some guys out in the ocean with no due process. This is generally referred to as murder. It would be nice if the press would mention this.

What a low, despicable person Starmer has shown himself to be, and for nothing.
It would be so unbelievably easy to make a patriotic and pride case for Britain while simultaneously putting the racists and bigots firmly back in their box.

I mean the speech writes itself.
So why is nobody writing it?
Matt Chorley, "Are flags patriotic or racist?"

Keir Starmer, "I'm a supporter of flags?"

Matt Chorley, "What about painting roundabouts?"

Keir Starmer, "In our flat we have the St George's flag. I think think they're patriotic. A great symbol of our nation"

This is nightmarishly bad. Like this is no longer a joke, someone has to take action. He has to be fired from the premiership.
Starmer isn’t going to criticise Farage’s rhetoric and claims Britain is facing an ‘invasion’ by migrants, The Times reports. “We recognise the strength of feeling,” his spokesman says.
